How much is the toilet leaking? Is it leaking into the tank below, or onto the floor of the bathroom?

My toilet, which has worked the same since we bought it 18 years ago, will hold water in it for awhile but eventually it "leaks" into the tank below it. It has worked fine all these years. I do remind people to add a little water to the toilet if it is empty before they use it.

If your toilet is leaking water onto the floor of the bathroom, then you certainly do need to fix that. You may want to look into just replacing the whole toilet.

Any obvious damage to the old ones?

This is good advice.

Also, is it possible that you are damaging the seals when you install them ? Maybe the damage doesn't show up at first but, after awhile it causes the seal to fail ??

A little vegetable oil after instillation might help too , as someone said.

And maybe knowing make and model would get some real answers.

Try replacing the waste ball and waste ball drive. You need new drive to properly center the waste ball under the gasket. Otherwise you gotta lift it with your foot.

Have you checked your flush mechanism (foot or hand)? While our seal is fine, it's our foot flush pedal that does not spring the blade completely shut. We have to get our foot under the pedal and lift up at the end of our flushing.

2 suggestions. First, open the flush valve all the way and rotate a toilet bowl brush thoroughly in the opening. If that doesn't work, the next time the ball valve is dry, pour a couple ounces of vegetable oil in and let it sit for several hours.

Most of the problems are debris in the seal and not the seal it self.
Thetford makes a tool called "bent screw driver" to clean it.
Cause of debris is sometimes linked to miss use. Too much toilet paper!
Make and model of toilet?
