What is the proper way to mount a gas spring, strut up or gas body up?

I've heard both ways.

Most of the gas springs I've noticed are mounted with the body at the bottom. Just what I've seen.

Correct. It DOES matter.

Doesn't matter.
More of a clearance issue, to determine orientation.
