Registration Conundrum

Aloha all!

Have an ‘05 Tundra with Grandby FWC. Originally purchased in Idaho and registered, insured, and licensed from that state. Now a resident of Hawaii but have kept rig in storage unit in Nevada. For the past eight years kept the registration/plates from Idaho as we still had property there. We sold that last year and now we don’t have a physical address for the registration. Idaho and Nevada require a physical address and impossible to license from Hawaii as an annual on island safety check required.

Ive heard of using South Dakota as a workaround but am curious as to how feasible this really is? Any suggestions/pointers gratefully received! Mahalo.

Cool! Problem solved!

Still waiting for the @sshats from the other thread like this to tell you how you’re doing something nefarious….
Or maybe they learned from the other thread, although that is not usually the case with old men and their supposed convictions! Lol.

Sorry you had to go through w that. We have been using the street address of our Post Office w Unit xxxx which is our PO Box number to deal w the physical address issues. We don't get home delivery of US mail in our locale so it's really a pia especially w packages, Idaho fish and game, and others for some inexplicable reason.

Well, thanks for all the replies but we actually solved the problem with a phone call to Nevada DMV. Contrary to what their website states they were able to get us registered here in Nevada quite easily. We needed five things, a current smog check, a VIN inspection, registration from our previous state, proof of Nevada insurance, and drivers licenses from the state we live in. Since we already had the Nevada insurance the whole process took us about two hours for the inspections and driving all over town to get them. We used one of the DMV satellite offices via AAA DMV. No appointment necessary unlike the main DMV office. And more importantly no penalty fees for the gap in registration because our vehicle was in storage and not driven, ahem, in the interim. Let’s just say we didn’t walk between these places! For about $140 we are legal again and feeling quite relieved. The only drawback that we can see is that we have to do an annual smog check and renew the registration on the same date or earlier or face penalties. It locks us into one time frame. Interestingly enough, only Reno and Las Vegas require the annual smog check so registering in the rural counties can save you that $30 and being locked into the renewal date because you could renew via the mail. Online renewals can only be done if you have a Nevada drivers license.

Check with hawaii DVM to see if there is a workaround. For years our daughter was in school in MT (non resident) with the car registered in oregon. When renewal came up it needed to get tested...... But Oregon has a process where you can fill out a form stating where the car is located for use outside the state with and get it renewed. you sign and state it will be tested when it is returned to the state.

Surely you know someone in Nevada that you can use for a physical address?
That's the easiest solution.

Warning, some rvnet do-gooder will likely reply to this and blather on about how you're somehow cheating the system...lol. Ignore feature works well though!
