Flat ground and long 6% grades???

Yeah .. I had a good laugh at that comment...which may have been true in the '90s era when diesel engines in our pickups had 180-200 hp and 420-460 torque.
My old '03 Dodge/Cummins 305 hp and 555 torque nv5600 3.73 gears pulls my 11.5k 5th wheel rv trailer or a fully loaded 16k GN triaxle stock trailer great...and gets 11-12 mpg pulling and 21-22 mpgs empty.

No doubt the 3.5 EB is a good engine in the F150 and will work fine for the size trailers F150 owners are using.... but its sure not in the same league as my early '00s Dodge/Cummins.

My 2000 F250 7.3 only has 235 hp/500 ft/lb, and I suppose a new Ecoboost will go up hills faster towing the same weight. A 9000 lb dump trailer slows me to about 50 on westbound I90 at Lookout Pass. But running up a hill faster doesn't necessarily equate to towing better.

Ultimately they become a niche truck limited to 7500# GVR TT's. They lack what it takes to be a true heavy duty truck.
It wasn't intended to be a heavy duty truck. Not everyone needs a jackhammer to drive a thumb tack.

I've been saying that since I started posting on here in 2001....

Choose TV based on payload needs, drivetrain based on your performance needs and wants.

I agree that payload is an issue but perhaps not for camping, light work and a daily driver. As a work truck to carry heavy loads the F150 will not cut it. The Powerboost un particular suffers from payload limitations.

I cannot speak about the Ecoboost but the Powerboost has plenty of power to pull up 6% grades and I would say 9000 lbs trailer. I wouldn't go any higher. At some point it is not how much you can tow but how much what you tow can throw you around.

My biggest disappointment with the Powerboost is that they limited the gas tank to 30 gallons. You are stopping every 200 miles or less whether you like it or not...

I don't disagree that the truck can compete with early 2000's trucks. But it's 2021? Being able to compete with a 20 year old truck is not a monumental acheivement.
At the end of the day the ecoboost are a solid platform with more than ample power, However they lack payload and do not have an exhaust brake.

I have been towing for over 21k miles with a 2021 F150 4x4 Lariat Powerboost. We tow a 32ft trailer with approx. 7500lbs loaded.

The truck has tons of power to spare. We went from Phx to Glacier and down the Oregon Coast this summer. No problems whatsoever going up hill or maintaining any speeds. I used to tow a similar trailer with a 2006 Nissan Titan and it is day and night.

The built in generator if you get, it is a god sent. It is silent most of the time. The mileage is 8-10 Mpg towing with the occasional 11 on flat, no wind. Truck is very quiet and a dream to tow uphill with.

The only issue I am still trying to fix is a little too much softness in the rear suspension. I can level front and rear of the truck when loaded with trailer but a leveled truck still makes the headlights point to trees. I tried a pair of Timbren SES and the helped but they are too harsh over bumps.

Other than that, I have learned to love this truck. Now, the wife wants a fifth wheel so I need something bigger ๐Ÿ™‚

If you can swing the Powerboost, it may be worth considering.

I can give you some real life experience with a 2020. Ours is rated for 12,500# with the 3.55 and the 20s, payload of about 1,750lbs. We towed our 5,500# Jayco X213 previously with a Chevrolet Avalanche with the 5.3L V8 rated for 8000lbs. While it moved it out nicely, the biggest issue I had was always a lack of power in the mountains and good pulls. The F-150 laughs at that.

First trip was to northern Pennsylvania where it rolled up and down, left and right and one couldn't get a rolling start on anything in the backwoods. 45mph roads that were super curvy, and I'm glad we had the 10-speed tranny to handle it.

Second big trip was to Montana in July/August. The biggest pass we went over was west of Helena and it capped out about 6,700ft. By the time I got to the top she was just getting warmed up - tranny read 217ยบ while cruising solidly just under 50mph. It had plenty of power had I wanted to push it. Obviously not Colorado passes, I anxiously await those tests, but I was pleased it handled it as it did in the heat. For reference the prior year in Colorado our Avalanche pushed 245ยบ on the tranny and struggled to maintain 45mph.

Average mileage is 9.5-10mpg I would say. I've seen somebody say you either have Eco or you have Boost. My biggest gripe is the engine braking on the downhill. I'm an early manual downshifter, and it does not hold back well at all. But I've learned how to drive it accordingly.

Overall I LOVE this truck. I'm not in the camp that says you need a 3/4 ton truck, especially not for this size load. Our next trailer will be in the 8,000lb range and I feel comfortable that it will handle it just fine.
