RAM 3500 SRW - Aisin vs. 68RFE - Update

Looking at new trucks - seems hard to find the Aisin in stock. Are the benefits worth the premium price? I tow in the Rockies (Idaho/Wyoming/Montana) so I suspect the Aisin may be worth it if the integration between the transmission/engine/exhaust brake/cruise control is ironed out. But, if the 68RFE is adequate, I can take my pick off the lot and negotiate a better price at the end of December.

Appreciate any thoughts or advice by current/former owners - thanks.

If the RAM I have now was a POS I would seriously be looking at a GMC they have really improved their looks.

Sounds like you got a screaming deal. Happy for ya!

The 68RFE is a great trans. Mine has been flawless over 55K.

I agree... I like the white stitching on black leather.

WOO HOO!!! Look everyone Fish and I agree!!!!!

I REALLY like the LIMITED black interior but just don't understand why they want more for one than the LongHorn??? My Son ordered the LIMITED 3500srw with all options and rear air and I ordered the Longhorn Dually rear air all options but auto dim and his truck was slightly more than mine.

You buy what you want, 98 buys what he wants so what's the discussion for and I don't buy either and no problem here .

If I were looking at a 3500 it would have to be the aisin. Chrysler is slowly outsourcing it's tranny's for a reason.

Really?????

What is your source on that one?

ZF and Aisin...

In addition you continue to tout that your next truck will have a Aisin tranny.

Why not license build the best from companies who specialize in building transmissions? ZF 8 speed, also used by Audi, BMW, Bentley, Jaguar, Maserati, Lancia, VW, Rolls Royce, Land Rover etc.

Got one in my Audi. Hands down the best transmission I have ever had in any vehicle. Can't think of one good reason not to use it.

My VW Touareg TDI has the 8 speed Aisin AWD version, not the ZF 8 speed. I can tell you that ATF fluid for an Aisin gearbox is a lot less expensive than the stuff that goes in anything german, like a ZF. The germans build great manual gearboxes, I am not so sure about their automatic transmissions.

The Aisin in my Touareg is the nicest automatic I've ever driven in, quality of shift wise. It is one slick tranny. Time will tell how it holds up pulling a 4000 pound dinkydoo 21 foot travel trailer, but I do plan on doing the ATF with a full change out flush/purge at 60k miles, probably 12 to 14 qts worth.

Well, found our new truck at Dennis Dillon:

It's a 2014 with the 68RFE - the Aisin trucks didn't have the other options and while I didn't really want the Limited, the pricing was very good - roughly 25% off sticker with all the applicable discounts. Buying experience was okay - they still tried to sell me a bunch of extra******until I threatened to walk out - got out of the chair and they were straight up after that.

I know - you want to see the payload:

Need to get a few personal touches done, but pretty pleased with the truck so far. Best of all, wife approved and she drove it home.

More eye candy:

Now I can't wait for spring!

Some more food to digest this Thanksgiving weekend: Ford is even putting the 6.7 Powerstroke and 6R140 in their F650 and F750 this coming model year. Dodge/Ram has only had a chassis cab since 2008 verses GM (who dropped out of this segment) and Ford who have been doing this much longer.

If a given motor is put in a vehicle that falls in the mdt range, ie 14K-26K lbs, it must be an MDT setup, or at least usable as one. So the folks with the Cummins motors, the dmax, ford, navistar v8 motors are also rated to MDT status.

True dat!

They also back up their claims by complying with the J2707 standards not just making up numbers!
