GM Strike

How does everyone feel about all the GM union members on strike placing nails and screws out onto the streets that their customers who keep them employed drive on? Causing damage to multiple vehicles. I wonder why I haven't bought a GM in years and this puts the nail to it that I would never again. Once those employees do things like this damaging vehicles of the people who purchase their vehicles in turn keeping them employed is a bunch of BS. This isn't the 60's and 70's anymore... people need to grow up and be civilized.

I think if you are taxpayer then you have every right to an opinion. Not only because public sector unions do over 3,400,000 hours of union work on taxpayer dime, but also because taxpayers had to bail out two auto companies due to their union obligations made the go bankrupt. So if anyone pays taxes here, they are entitle to an opinion regardless if you like it otle not.
Yeah, it was the unions, and not inept management, that caused the bankruptcy.

Well, if you look at it. It was the UAW that forced the pension and other entitlements on that the caused GM to go bankrupt. They agreed to them because they could sustain them as long as the economy was good, but couldn't when the economy went under. This is why GM wants bonuses want to reflect profits because they learned their lesson.
If GM didn't agree them they would have strikes causing eventually causing a bankruptcy as well. So what choice did they have?

From the taxpayer prospective it was both of them.
They both would have suffered if GM was allowed to fail. They both benefited from the bail out.

It is not just the union members. GM has a history of paying top management way too much. One of things that bothers me most about owning stock is that I have never had any input on how much management is paid.

Another opinion I have is that the top 3 or 4 levels of publicly owned companies should be required to get their bonuses on a 5 year payment plan so that they look farther out with their planning and actions. GM has had several managers take fortunes and run while the company falls apart.

Been Union, been non Union, both paid well enough to fund my college education in real time. Now manage both Union and non union shops.

The common denominators here that are causing a lot of the riff in the discussion are...
1. There is a large % of the population that either by will power or intelligence level, will never rise above the position of menial to skilled labor. Period.
2. There are people performing the same tasks as #1 who excel at it for various reasons and they make the #1s look bad and there are more #1s than #2s. Hence the sentiment that people get paid too much for the service they provide. Totally the case for some, not the case for others in "equal" positions.
That's the rub with unions. The socialism of the equality across the board.
Bad in that it rewards those who "just get by" for whatever reason they're just barely getting by. Good in that, somewhere there's a break even point between fair compensation and the effort put in to get that compensation. And without Union representation (not just UAW), there would be a disparity and more common folk getting taken advantage of.
And for those that cannot fathom how CEOs make "so much" and even mid level managers. You are probably a #1 either by choice or default.
I actively manage or am responsible for the performance about 100 people currently, but that number fluctuates as high as several hundred sometimes. If you're a #2. You likely get it. If you're a #1, you probably don't.

Best comment yet. I believe your #1 is will power. So many have had too much given to them that they have little desire to be better and there is so much assistance from the Federal, State and local governments that they can get by without working.

Domino's Pizza pays $15hr to deliver pizza in these parts and you also get tips.
It is a free country. Let those that want to deliver pizza do their thing and those that want to assemble autos do their thing.

Top chef for Dominos and the automotive engineers are the one's that will pull down the real money. Time to go back to school.

I'm one guy who would've been tickled pink to have made those wages. Don't forget the profit sharing and fantastic benefits that were added to those hourly wages. I think the CEO is making way too much money but if he can pay me that kind of money so be it.

Dude, have you had Dominos in the last few years? They're not bad now. Not the tomato paste cardboard of years past! Still prefer PapaJohns for cardboard pizza though! For the garlic butter sauce!

I buy products made by UAW workers. Virtually everyone on this site does too and we all have finite resources so we have to make tough choices on how to spend our money. The feeling that a bunch of our money is going to whiny crybabies making twice the going wage and 4 times the benefits for this area does not make me one bit happy. I have said it before, if they don't like the job for what it pays quit and let someone who wants the job have it. There is no shortage of willing workers around the Spring Hill plant. And don't be shocked if my next car comes from the Kia plant in West Point Georgia. The one that I have has delivered tremendous value. If they ever start making pickups there the UAW is really going to start feeling the heat. But don't blame me when that happens because I have no horse in this race.

Yes, you bond and stock holders, you taxpayers, just shut up and pay the pensions of these fine folks. Your retirement is of no importance.

Maybe, maybe not. Don't forget what Wilson said, "...what was good for our country was good for General Motors, and vice versa."
