Tool box / bed cover combo?

I guess I want my cake and eat it too.

Recently acquired a 2013 GMC Sierra 2500 with the 6.6 Duramax, 6 1/2' bed length. Logically, (my wife said), it was time to sell the 25' bumper pull and upgrade to a 5th wheel. So, we purchased a 2015 Columbus, 36'. We've already gone on our first camping trip, love the truck / trailer setup. However, I had to ditch the large Weatherguard toolbox that was in the bed of the truck (RV shop that installed the 5th wheel hitch said it would not clear the 5th wheel during sharp turns).

Question is I'm looking at some low profile toolboxes but also would like the option of a roll out or folding bed cover. Anyone have such a setup?

Thanks in advance.

I had a custom box made "L" shaped to go under the roll to cassette. I was complaining about loosing the space when I was at the place where I got the 52 gallon tank installed (love the tank) and the guy said why don't we make one to go under the roll top cassette. $600 later I have the perfect solution for us. 2015 Ram 3500 long bed SRW.

When we towed our 5th wheel, I loved the setup I had with our SB RAM. Chris

Maybe for the OP, but with a 14,000# GVWR and 5,411# payload, not likely! :B

That's "IF" you are concerned with the self imposed limitations of the Class 3 14k GVWR.

Just my pin alone is 5,750# plus that HUGE toolbox full of tools and that monster of a hitch. OH yea full tank of fuel and 350#'s of adults. At my RAWR and under my FAWR, OH MY how can I be over my GVWR???

Check out the line of 5th wheel tool boxes shown on AMAZON. Type in google search "5th wheel tool boxes for truck AMAZON" lots of photos...

I also have the Fold-A-Cover four folding panels mounted on my truck and when I used my fifth wheel I could fold them back up behind the rear window and all cleared just fine...

I notice some of the trucks have a low profile storage box across the rear of the truck bed that is notched out to clear the 5th wheel.

I never liked the idea of not having a locked tail gate and bed cover when unhitched...

I have a Pro Tech tool box it is only 11 or 12 inches tall. It is usually made to sit behind the hitch (tailgate side). I fabbed up some rails for it and have it sitting up against the cab at bed rail level so a cover would fit over it and the fifth wheel cant hit it. I wanted to be able to slide lumber etc under it. I did not want to lose my bed floor space.

I was VERY lucky I found the pictured tool box in around 2009 and installed it in my 1998 2500 12V, I paid $300 used. Then moved it to the 11 HO DRW and now the 15 DRW. To buy that same box now would be WELL over $1,000.

Cummins, that is a big box, I moved the one out of the 2001 into the 2016, and was able to put 1-1/2" spacers under it so I could haul some 8' lumber in it. I also got another roll up bed cover for it. You can get a lot of Stuff in that box!!

I have a long box dually with a regular tool box . I took a roll top cover and modified it so I can use the top and still have the tool box. Ideally a box that fits below the bedrails would be better , but sometimes you have to work with what you have. Has worked good on my last two trucks. YMMV.
