Ice cream?

Why wonโ€™t RV freezers keep ice cream frozen? Meat freezes, ice freezes but ice cream is always mush.

All I can say is that on our boondocker a couple weeks ago, the kids' popsicles stayed fully frozen with zero issues, as did the 2 bags of ice. Maybe the high-50's low temps helped. :B

We have had at least 12 RV fridges from Norcold and Dometic. In slides and not in slides. I have heard over the years many tall tales of โ€œhardโ€ ice cream. I have added fans outside and even took off the vent covers in efforts to get the freezer colder.

We are in Florida. Itโ€™s hot here. Our ice cream has never been hard in any of our freezers. Yes we use fans in the fridge-keeps from freezing that stuff as we set all our fridges to COLDEST setting. Never met anyone that could keep ice cream truly cold down here either, unless they had a residential unit. It may just be a regional thing but no ice cream sandwiches here except from the local campground store if they have em. Also our ice freezes into a block in a few days if untouched.

Fans in the fridge compartment are to stir the air for more consistent cooling. I know that if I don't use my little fan, I'll freeze stuff in one spot and other spots seem a bit "warm". I'm usually able to operate 1 number warmer with it than without.

SHHH, it doesn't work, those that haven't tried it know that it doesn't work.

Hi,

If I understand you correctly, you added a fan in the food part of fridge and not the freezer?

The working medium passes through the freezer first, so adding a fan seems to me to do nada for the freezer. I know it makes no difference in my freezer whether the fan is "on" or "off".

Adding a fan to the "back" (chimney) of the fridge does improve cooling time and freezer operation.

I added a computer fan inside the fridge. Freezer easily keeps ice cream frozen.

I didnโ€™t think my fridge was performing as well as it should be either, so I removed it and made some improvements to the baffling and insulation.
I also installed that modification that allows you more range of temperature control.
I canโ€™t remember the name of the product but I have no problem now with keeping ice cream super cold.

for us: if i put the ice cream on the shelf, it does stay somewhat soft. so i place the ice cream sandwiches under on the bottom of the freezer and half gallons too if we take that. We have always been able to keep our ice cream hard. Good Luck & Be Safe ! ! !

Frig setting on high freezes the food in the frig section but ice cream will never freeze no matter the location in the freezer. I will be buying a little 3.5 or 5 cu. ft. freezer for next summer.

YMMV... but the fan in the fridge makes the freezer colder. If you think about it, the freezer temperature is heat transfer conduction from the freezer. Pushing the air across the fins not only helps convection, but also conduction... or I'm full of brown stuff and just have a good fridge ๐Ÿ™‚

Freezer and food compartment are completely separate...no connection between the two compartments

Freezer Low Temp Evap Coil gets the coldest ammonia to absorb the heat from freezer THEN that ammonia tries to absorb heat from food compartment.
The colder the freezer gets the more capacity the ammonia will have to absorb heat from food compartment

Freezer temp will affect food compartment temp.....food compartment temp does not affect freezer temp
Warm food compartment temp will cause thermostat to turn heat source on more frequently which in affect will cause freezer to get colder EVEN if food compartment does not get colder...

Fan circulating the cool air inside the food compartment helps to even out the overall temp in food compartment regardless of freezer temp
Is it time for your medication or mine?

The coldest spot in most RV fridge is the back lower left hand corner. Keep the carton shoved back in that corner.
