The Maddox Family Campground on Chincoteague has been sold to the same company that is renovating Sunset Beach Resort in Northampton County.
"We began operating the property on March 1," said Kathleen Walsh, regional manager of AdvancedOutdoor Solutions, the management company for Bluewater Development Corporation, owned by Jack and Todd Burbage of Berlin, Maryland.
The company also owns the Fairfield Inn and Suites and The Jackspot restaurant on Chincoteague.
Wayne and Kay Maddox, the previous longtime owners of the campground, could not immediately be reached for comment.
The new owners plan to keep the 200-acre property, the closest campground to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, in operation as a campground.
But they will be making numerous improvements in the coming days, Walsh said.
Improvements to be made this season include new playground equipment, picnic tables and fire rings, among other upgrades.
"But the true transformation will come for the 2017 camping season," said Walsh.
Major upgrades to the property will be done after Nov. 30, 2016 when the campground will close.
When it reopens for the 2017 camping season, campers will see a completely renovated campground, including new bathhouses, a remodeled office and store and new recreational areas, as well as the addition of camping cottages.
Other planned upgrades include paved roads and RV pads and 50-amp full hookup service at every campsite.
"We will reopen in the spring of 2017 as a brand-new, remodeled resort," Walsh said.
A rendering showing details of the planned changes will be available sometime in early summer and will be posted at the campground and on its website, maddoxfamilycampground.com.
The best way to follow progress of the improvements is to like the Facebook page, Maddox Family Campground.
All the campground's current employees have been retained after the change in ownership and it will be adding more staff, Walsh said.
"They'll see all the friendly faces that have welcomed them in the past," she said of returning campers.
Walsh responded to rumors that the property might be redeveloped for uses other than a campground, saying, "We love camping; we're committed to camping. We just want to take it to the next level."
