Rodanthe, NC then south in January

Just to make the trek to FL more interesting, we are thinking of going to Rodanthe for a few days mid-Jan and then taking the ferries to Ocracoke & Cedar Island, onward to Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, Charleston, etc.
Are we crazy?

I've lived on Cedar Island, one of your stops, since 2001. You just never know. It is rare to get a hard freeze. We've been in shorts in Jan and we've been in heavy coats. If it gets cold at night it usually warns nice when the sun comes up.

Agree with Bucky: the wind is the annoying thing. NE is cold, SW is nice.

Don't forget the constant 30 mph wind out of the NE. I'd skip it. Average temps don't mean much when you are on the wrong side of them. MB in Jan is no picnic either, go farther south.

Sounds like a good plan. Just be mindful that while weather is usually good that time of year we do see snow and ice from time to time. Rare but it do happen.

No, you are not crazy !
Just keep in mind that you might hit summer like weather or weather in the upper thirties.
Every year on our trip to Key Largo we try to do a week or so in the Everglades or the Springs Area of Florida.

We like the outer banks that time of year, but there is not a lot going on - one reason we like it.

In January, the average high temp is 57ยบ, the average low is 37ยบ. It can get into the 70's and often is below freezing. On average, 11 days in January will get below freezing temperatures in the mornings. Also, January is the second rainiest month with 11 days having rain, on average.
