Bryce North Campground: First come first served

We just had a change in plans and will be going by Bryce toward the end of July. We thought we might try to stay there for a couple of nights on the way through. I just checked with rec.gov and no sites are available for our dates.

I know that Ruby's is an option, and I will keep checking daily for cancellations at North campground, but does anyone have any experience with the First Come First Serve sites and what the odds of getting one of those might be?

We have a 28' Fiver and prefer dry camping.

Thanks

+1 on 4runnerguy's advice. Exactly how I got a campsite in Bridalveil CG in Yosemite. Once there I stayed 5 nights, and observed that the CG usually didn't fill until sometime between 12:30 pm and 3:30 pm M-Th, but when I left Friday morning there were people waiting to grab a site.

I showed up at Red Canyon CG one June early afternoon and there were several sites left, so I got one and spent the night. Hiking the Arches Trail was a real scenic treat, and the CG had showers which was a plus for me. Nice place.

Can't tell you about July/August, as it's too hot for us to do the southern Utah thing, but if the other months are any indication, arrive on a Sunday around noon for your best shot. Many Utahns take advantage of their NP's and head there on the weekends, heading home Sunday night. If the park CG's are full, try Red Canyon NFS CG a few miles west of Bryce on UT 12. It's also all FC/FS.

Thanks.
