Utah - I-15 - Scipio and Beaver - Flying J Issues?

The Salt Lake Tribune posted an article about a scam associated with the Flying J locations on I-15 in Scipio and Beaver. The owner of those locations also owns tire shops and was preying on folks towing RV's.

I wanted to see if anyone here has experienced issues with these locations.

How is the Flying J at Richfield?

I used it last year and it is okay. It does NOT have RV pumps like they state online.

That's one of their corporate stores. I haven't personally heard any complaints.

Yours is the only good experience I have heard. I'm glad it worked out in your case.

That's the rub. He owns the station, the tire store, etc. It's a complete setup owned and operated my Mark Yardley. It's not a corporate location for Pilot Flying J.

Here is the official statement from Pilot Flying J

"Pilot Flying Jโ€™s relationship with the Flying J Travel Plaza locations in Scipio and Beaver, Utah, โ€“ both locations owned and operated by Mark J. Yardley โ€“ is limited to leasing the diesel islands from those stores. This relationship allows Pilot Flying Jโ€™s extensive customer base access to fuel at strategically located travel plazas in its fuel network. Pilot Flying J has no direct control over the non-diesel products or services that the locations offer, including any adjacent repair shops. Pilot Flying J does not own or operate Goobers' Service, Goobers & Gomers Service, Oak Creek Tire or any other repair shops at these locations."

The only problem with their statement is that the Pilot Flying J logo also appears on the regular islands - not just the diesel islands.

The moral of the story is that those locations should be avoided, or at the very least, travelers should exercise situational awareness when using those locations. Does it make Pilot Flying J look bad? That's up to the eye of the beholder.

I am glad to see old JimBob and his golf cart still has a job. He was there at the truck pumps in '06, '08, '11 and 2013. Nice to know what is going on so you can keep an eye him and make sure he stays away from your rig. The scam has been reported a number of times on this forum but it never hurts to mention it again so you know what to expect.

I fuel up at the Beaver Flying J several times a year. I use the RV pumps right across from the tire shop and have noticed on a few occasions the shop crew huddled up and staring at my rig and having some kind of discussion. Have never had any contact with them and I dont think I could have been as polite as the other posters if they walked over and touched my tires. Did not think much more of it until I saw this post. After seeing this I will find another fuel dealer to give my money to.

I've had this happen several times in different locations, mostly on I-80 crossing Nevada. A guy at the Shell station in Wells was particularly aggressive. Told me I could die crossing the salt flats in the summer heat when my tire was certain to blow out. Also had the same experience with the Chevron station in Elko.

While gassing up at the Beaver station a few years back, I ,too, was approached about my tires. I simply smiled and thanked the attendant profusely for bringing the problem to my attention and left. : )

My daughter lives in SLC and we typically make this trip every other year or so. I've found that filling up the mh at the Loves in Cedar City offers the best price and service. We just came through there last week, and we always comment to each other about our experience at that Flying J.
