Southern Colorado, US 160, and fires

Anyone planning to travel US 160 between Walsenburg and Alamosa be aware that the highway is closed between La Veta and Ft Garland. Check ahead before proceeding or go around to the north or south.

We live up here in Montana and are dreading August/Sept. So far, we have no real fires because we are about the only mountain state that is getting rain and our creeks/rivers are still very high from the snow-pack we got. But we are now just about at the end of rain (got a half inch on Friday) and so it will begin.

In addition to US 160, CO 12 south of La Veta over Cuchara Pass is also closed due to the fire.

We went through there Thursday and fire was just starting to gain momentum. We are in Gunnison and fortunately we only smelled smoke one time for a short while.

I have two friends trying to get through there today, guess they will have to take a very long detour.
