Thinking of traveling on Rt 50 from near the St. Louis area to I79 in West Virginia. Don't want to spend all day on the interstates.

How is the road and are there things to see and do close to Rt 50?

True of ALL U.S. highways going through major towns.

I love travelling good 2-lanes out through the countryside but learned the hard way, on a motorcycle in 95 degree heat, to **NOT** stay on those routes going through major cities.

Hop on the Interstate or other 4-lane and get back off after town.

I don't think you're going to like U.S. 50 going through Cincinnati. Its a designated truck route that follows the river. You'll mostly see semis, rail cars and barges, loading/unloading their cargo into/out of warehouses. But you can get a good look at the backsides of Paul Brown Stadium, home of the Cincinnati Bengals and Great American Ball Park, home of the Cincinnati Reds, and U.S. Bank Arena, where you could watch our Ice Hockey Team play - if we still had a team.
And Lawrenceburg is in Indiana, west of Cincinnati.
Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

Depends on what you want to see and how far off 50 you are willing to go. I live 2 miles off of 50 and have driven it from here in Indiana to Colorado. For me it was a road from here to where I wanted to go. I just came from St. Louis yesterday on I-70 part way and didn't find anything I was interested in either so took US-46 from I-70 to Columbus and on to home. But then we just wanted to be home after leaving Rapid City on Sunday. In Seymour,In. there is a John Melloncamp arts center, a few miles north in Columbus there lots of stuff to see and do plus a couple of campgrounds. North Vernon has an interesting County park with camping sites and the town of Vernon has some Civil War history. A state park in Versailles and a Casino at Lawrenceburg just east of Cinci. For me part of the excitement of finding places is going and watching the road signs along the way. Have a safe trip.

Theres a website called route50.com. has good information on the entire road, and links to some of the local tourism/commerce board.

When i did hwy 50 west it got me started in looking for different sites, etc.

Have a look at US 40.
It roughly parallels I-70 and might be a better option.
I have no personal experience with either route....at least not much of it.

I live in Marietta Ohio. I have traveled from Cincinatti, OH to Clarksburg, WV on Rt 50. I would use the interstate!!!!! much fater.

RT 50 has mostly 4 lanes in Ohio and WVA. In OH the speed is 60 and some places 55, because the local cops need the speeding tickets for income. WVA is 65 and 4 lanes, hilly, scenic, heavy oil/gas traffic.

Both states have limited gas stops and not much to keep you interested in other than hyway.
