We have taken the same route for last 10 years going south and it's 50/50 when passing thru Richmond driving our 38ft motorhome flat towing my Honda. This year we will try to bypass it by taking I64 to HWY 288 and connecting onto I95 at Chester. Anybody used this alternative.
thx Larry

One way to figure it out Larry, take 288 down and 295 back, (or vice versa)
and pick the one you like better for future use.

I used to take 295 around Richmond. The road was fine and it seemed to be a more relaxing drive. But over time it became very rough and full of pot holes and the amount of truck traffic increased. I went back to going straight through on 95 and found it worked fine for me. I try to hit durning non rush hour.

Here is a completely different route.
I81 south to Scranton.
I476 south to Philly.
I95 south thru Wilmington
Route 13 south
follow rt13 south thru the entire DELMARVA peninsula to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel
Then route 58 west to Emporia.
then I95 south.
.............
The traffic to and around Philly can be heavy.
Once on route 13 it gets much more relaxing. Multiple places to get fuel, food, shopping. Great State Park Campgrounds in Delaware. Great scenery. Farm produce stands. More campgrounds and friendly Walmarts down the peninsula.
Friendly Walmart and Cracker Barrel in Emporia.
The CBBT may look scary but the experience out ways scary. I drive it in a 38ft pusher towing a Chevy van easily.

Never had a problem getting around Richmond. Usually use the bypass around the east side.

My daughter lives in Charlottesville and I live in Florida. I use 288 most times.

Easy going.

We use 288 everytime going south. 32 miles to 95 of not to crowded highway.

I have for years taken I-95 straight through Richmond going South. Sometimes taking the 295 by pass. You could continue on I-64 East to I-295 South but 288 is a good route to bypass most of the Richmond-Petersburg grief. I-295 puts you South of all of it.

You can certainly take 288, but personally, I'd stay on 64 a few more miles and pickup I295 South, it will take you around Richmond and by pass all of Richmond and Petersburg and put you back onto 95 South of Petersburg. Far less traffic, almost no
congestion and better scenery, unless you like looking at cities.
Check it out on Google maps.

We start off from Watertown NY
Take I81 south to Staunton. Take I64 from there to Short Pump where we would pick up HWY 288.
