I did the amateur version of hedging a few weeks ago: Filled up my 2 diesel vehicles, 2 gas vehicles, and bought circa 40 gallons of gas (for the toys) and 40 gallons of diesel) all before a multi-day vacation with kids / grandkids...all assuming that pricing would continue to go up.
Of course, my close connection with Mr. Murphy impacted this so that prices promptly dropped a few cents, meaning that my hedging for the vacation probably cost me $50 - $75 or so rather than saving anything.

Store it in your garage using gallon milk jugs. Have friends, relatives, and neighbors save the empty jugs for you. If done right you could pack @ 34,000 of them in a 24x24 garage.
I have a burn barrel in my yard.

I didn't doo the math, but I believe you.
To save money with high gas prices, I mostly just run farm fuel in the brodozer and take gas cans East with me every week where gas is a buck a gallon cheaper (if I remember to grab them).

Gasoline has a short "shelf life". I believe it's 6 months but I'm sure someone knows and will post it. There are stabilizers that can be added to the fuel that will add a couple months of usability to the gasoline. Diesel has a longer "shelf life". You can store fuel in above ground fuel tanks just like on farms and residential home heating oil. Gasoline is more volatile than diesel.

You missed the point....hedging on futures isn't about the shelf life of fuel, lol.

There was a story about doing just this on 60 Minutes or the like a long time ago, maybe a decade. Seem to remember you could deposit whatever dollar figure you wanted into the gas bank and the pump would reset to the price you bought it for. I do not remember what the business name was nor which brand of pumps you had to use.
