not enough truck for a 5000 lb travel trailer imho
ok for short weekend trips of 50 or 60 miles at lower speeds and off the freeways
i would stay around the 2500 mark for gross towing weight, the stuff you add to a trailer can add up fast to 1000 lbs.

We have a 2004 4Runner, which is 15 years older, that has the same 4.0 L V6. We installed the Hidden Hitch several years ago, which is now the Draw Tite hitch. We were able to use a wdh since it is a frame mount. Increased our towing and tongue weight from 6000/600 lbs to 7300/730 lbs. We hooked up our 25', 6000 lb tt and towed a couple hundred miles on flat desert land. Once we got home we started looking for a Tundra since the trailer was too much.
4Runners just do not have enough weight and wheel base length to haul anything much over 4000-5000 lbs. We pulled our previous 2000-3000 lb pop-up several thousand miles and it did a wonderful job, even in the mountains.
We now use our 2010 Tundra to pull our tt and it does a wonderful job!

Under 4K loaded weight will be a comfortable tow experience with some room to spare as long as youโ€™re not overloading the 4Runner with passengers and stuff (ie filling all the seats with linebackers).

As mentioned previously the stock hitch is only bolted to the cross member and not rated for use with a wd hitch. If you need one (probably want one) you need to get a frame mounted hitch such as the one from the Lexus suv.

We towed a 19 ft Airstream that totaled about 4500lbs loaded. We didn't use load distribution bars as it was a 2012 and those hitches weren't rated for load dist. You would need to get a Lexus hitch to use load dist. We used only sway control. It performed good and had a fair amount of power for a 6 cyl. We towed only east of the Mississippi.
