So worrying is a waste of time.

when it is your grandkids, it is never a waste of time. they have lived there for almost a year, never driven through from Washington state to Haines..
I find your comment unfeeling....

X2.
It is rare.
Mike. Comments are anecdotal or personal opinions, and worth what you paid for them.

If you want to be proactive? Maybe invest in an InReach. They carry it with in the car...can send daily updates, plus messages and a call for help if needs be.

Hey it is northern driving & mountain driving as well. It is all about the weather & there are plenty of sites online for current weather & road cams. The problem is cellphone coverage. Very spotty. Load up the car with blankets, water, & emergency supplies. Not likely to need them but if you do, you do.

Are your grandaughter and boyfriend smart or dumb? Do they know how to drive in snow?
If the answers are smart and yes, then don't worry.
If not, then I'd be worried.

They had better have food, a source of heat, blankets and winter clothes this late in the year. As others have said weather is very unpredictable in the north
