I know that some states have such laws, but taxing a non-land/real estate property year after year just seems so...............socialist.

What kind of RV does the OP have? is is motorized, or is it a trailer? If a trailer, in GA you pay property taxes on it each year just like any other property. If motorized, you pay the one time title tax when you register it in the state, there after, only pay the $20 tag fee.

I do know that as a former Georgia county Tax Assessor, I would deny a homestead (and have) if we discovered vehicles registered to addresses in other states, or even other counties in Georgia. There have been court cases in Georgia to back this up. If you own a home and were to lose a homestead or be denied one, it would cost you a lot more than whatever you might save registering in Tennessee. For homestead most counties will ask (we did) where all of your vehicles are registered. We also look at drivers licenses.

Ok. How does your legal state find you have registered something out of state.

Well there is as story elsewhere about a U-Haul truck. 2 cars. a Pick up pulling a Trailer and a Semi.. The semi was tailgating and WHAM WHAM WHAM a 4 car accident.. now the Officer investigating has the Driver's licene and registration of all four drivers.

Had the RVer had one state on the ride and on on the D-Note.. He'd have known

And that' show they got found out.

They had "Drivng" contact with the police. May have been a fender bender (Oh in the crash described cross state registration was NOT an issue or a speeding or other traffic violation or just a cop with his night stick not properly holstered (Think about that "A stick up...)

But that's how they find out.

I would assume that your Legal residence is whatever state you lived the biggest part of the year, (7 months). of course you would need to prove that.

^ Not being argumentative, but having lived through this scenario multiple times, your legal residence state doesnโ€™t know about vehicles you have registered in other states.
Nor do the states Iโ€™ve done this in care if you have an in-state Driverโ€™s license.
In fact, I had, and still do, a valid AZ license. Theyโ€™re good for 30 years or something and I didnโ€™t have to surrender it because I moved back to a state I lived in previously and got a new drivers license there by mail, lol.
I had that AZ license in 3 states and re-titled and registered my vehicles without a corresponding DL for that state.
Title and registration typically cares about proof of residency and THEY want your money, so simple proof of residency, utility bill , tax bill, school tuition or registration, rental receipt will establish your residency with that state.
Example. Tax home in WA, moved to AK, new title and AK tags no problem. Showed them my lease for the house.
WI 2nd home. Vehicle never even been to my residence state, show a utility bill, got WI title and regs.
Other states itโ€™s worked in WA, CO, NM and AZ.

your legal residence state is going to want the money, and in most cases can pursue your attempts to avoid paying registration fees/taxes.

Likely the best answer to date.

Generally it is a good idea if the Driver's license and the Vehicle registered to the name on the license are registered to the same address.. I do say "GENERALLY"

Some years ago the (I THINK) Montana LLC was a popular way to avoid taxes. A few states started deciding how much their residents owed them Generally they were not in the least conservative in their estimates. Truly liberal in fact. A few others were looking into it including MICHIGAN but I do not know what came of that.

So this is information.. The only advice I can give is you need professional help (Tax attorney) .

Having moved through many states, some temporary, some more permanent, sometimes multiple homes and multiple vehicles in different states, I can say that there is no universal answer and virtually noone cares save for the cops if you get pulled over. (Insurance companies care, but sometimes they wouldn't even modify our policy until it renewed. I'd just notify them and let them decide where they want to write it to.)
And having gone through that scenario multiple times, as long as you have a reasonable explanation for the officer, it's never been a problem for me. I've actually presented 3 different state drivers license, license plates and insurance and not an issue as long as everything is valid and checks out.

For the OP, if GA is cheaper, it's a slam dunk because that appears to be your resident state (not to be confused with tax home if it matters). If TN is cheaper or more convenient, and you can produce the right documentation to get it titled and registered there then do it there.

I would think (based on Florida experience) GA. I would call or e-mail the State Vehicle Registration office and ask them. They live there, I don't.

I think that the states and your insurance company both care more about where the vehicle is "homed". Where does it spend the majority of its time?
