Toilet bowl no longer holds water

I can fill the bowl with 2-3 inches of water, but it drains out in about 30 seconds. I assume it's the valve seal. What's the fix for this?

" I think you gotta tell these guys what kind of potty you are dealing with."

I asked that earlier, guess it doesn't matter even tho there are several types of toilets.

More fun to answer without knowing the facts.

I replaced mine by simply holding the dump open and reaching in there and removing the old one and in a similar manner installing a new one.

BTW, I think you gotta tell these guys what kind of potty you are dealing with.

All good advice above and the seal is easy to replace on most models.

Another thing to look at is whether the seal was knocked out of position (the groove) by a toilet brush. The wife used to do this from time to time on our old Thetford toilet. Just push it back in place if that's the case.

Turn water supply off
Hold toilet ball valve open
Using your HANDS..rub dish soap on seal top/bottom as you flex it and gentle scape any crud/scale off seal (hard to damage/tear just using your hands)
Scrub top of ball valve
Then thoroughly rinse the seal & ball valve
Afterwards using your HANDS again---rub seal thoroughly with Olive Oil (or Plumbers Grease)

IF seal still doesn't hold water......time for new seal and maybe ball valve if it is scored
Is it time for your medication or mine?

So do you take the rubber seal off, or do you squeeze the wire between it and the flapper?

turn the water off and hold the flapper open with your foot. i left the gasket in place and *gently* run the edge if the coat hanger (anything like that will do...pipe cleaner, flat toothpick, etc) clean the crevice.

didn't look at the link but this was our fix.

there should be a rubber gasket lining the perimeter of the flapper opening. we found that there was a buildup of 'stuff' in the crevice of that gasket into which the edge of the flapper would be inserted. the 'stuff' was preventing the flapper from completely sealing. the more 'stuff' the faster the bowl will empty. we took a metal hanger and used the end to *GENTLY* scrape that crevice to clear the 'stuff'. did I mention do this *GENTLY*?

good luck.
