3/4 ton gasser gas mileage?

TundraTower

Monday we are going to try out a 3/4 ton gas Silverado 3/4 ton, 4.1 axle ratio, 4WD. Going from a Tundra because we've run out of GVWR on the truck (because we take too much stuff).

We get 8-9 MPG in the Tundra towing 8K lbs. What kind of gas mileage is anyone getting in the 3/4 ton gas Chevy's or GMC's with similar gear ratio --- solo and towing ???

Thanks.

Thanks IdaD. I focused on the GVWR because it has legal significance even here in minimally regulated Alabama. I've got a spreadsheet that calculates all the axle, tongue, and vehicle loads for the different trip loadings for our rig so I watch all those numbers.

I agree the payload door sticker was meaningless. I'm even more confused that it did not match the scale weight/GVWR calculation, either with or without fuel.

I really hated to part with the Tundra but I got a call today from the guy that bought it off the chevy dealer lot (it stayed there 4 days). He was tickled to death and wanted to know about all the modifications and switches I added. I'm sending him a care package tomorrow with some spare parts and the window sticker from original purpose. There's nothing like having the original window sticker. Sounds like it got a good home.

NWnative - you are correct, it THEORETICALLY has 4-500 lbs less payload than the gasser. On our second test ride we literally took it to the Pilot truck stop nearby and weighed it, then filled it with fuel to get the fuel weight.

Subtracting actual weight with fuel from the GVWR actually yields a payload number slightly above what is on the tire door sticker. IN any event I took all those numbers home to run my calculations, "cool off", and try to make the decision rationally. The GVWR numbers turned out to be a good fit for us (finally).

Congrats on the truck, and FWIW you can ignore your payload rating. Stick within the axle ratings which should be in the 6000-6500 range and you'll be golden. Just register it for the proper weight in your home state. Payload ratings are meaningless on diesel 3/4 ton trucks and have no legal or practical significance.

Again, congrats. Tundras have lots of power but you're swinging in a different weight class now.

I had a 2017 power wagon.
It was a beast to say the least. Great truck.
15mpg going 55 on flat ground at 6000+' altitude.

Pulled a Nash 17k for many miles. 4mpg coming across Kansas with a head wind. 8-9 mpg in normal conditions

If I were you I'd skip the 6.0. I think you're going to be less happy with the trucks performance, empty and loaded. Might be better off finding a newer F250 gasser. Or find a Chevy with the 6.2.

I think the 6.2 is only available in a 1500

That is true, they changed to 4.10 only in 2015 I believe. I ordered a new 2015 and the only option was 4.10. A 2011 I ordered gave me a 3.73 option.

Actually my dad purchased one of the first 6.0 2500HD trucks (2000) and it had 4.10 gears.

Prior to about 15, 3.73 was standard, but could order 4.10. After changing to 4.10 being standard, not sure if you can even order 3.73 as an option.

It is what it is. Hey...you may go back some day! I figured the loss of power from your Toy to the Chev 6.0 would be disappointing. Sounds like you fixed the issue though!! Great choice...new Chev Duramax! Most any issue can be solved with a fat wallet!!:B :C Congrats on the new truck! Pic soon to follow???

I am sure you will be happy with the Diesel. Will be a pulling machine. With that said, you mentioned payload as an issue. The 2500 with the Diesel is pretty low on payload if I remember correctly when i looked at them. Maybe you should have gone with the 3500? At any rate....enjoy the new ride.
