Thanks for the responses. We decided to take 299 and stay in Red Bluff then drive down to Sacramento on Saturday. No need for us to drive that far and deal with Friday afternoon traffic.

I loved the Hwy 20 drive across. It was so scenic and easy traveling.

In a hurry, or want more scenic? I HATE I5 so I'd probably go 101s and cut across on 20 (through Upper Lake) to I5. Probably a bit quicker to come across on 299, but you've got some Twisties either way. Nothing bad though. And 101 is way prettier than 5.

If you want to stay on freeways only you could do 101s to 37e to 80. That would take probably an hour longer than the other two ways.

on edit: Wait!!! I see you said the 21st. Do NOT take 37 on a Friday afternoon.
