If you give more specific information on what you like, you will get better suggestions.

Beach? Mountains? Lake front?

What do you like to do? What type of campgrounds are you looking for? RV parks? State or National parks? Boondocking?

81 south, parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway, I'm close to Asheville and the Smokey Mtns and I'm only about 600 miles, Nashville, Knoxville, and hundreds of others. I've lived here for 35 yrs and haven't seen it all yet.

I see that Charleston, Savanah and Brunswick have all been mentioned. X2 to all of those. James Island County Park, Skidaway State Park and Blythe Island Regional Park are all favorites of mine.

However, within your parameters, my choice would be Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve . Itโ€™s operated by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. Not your typical shuffleboard and bingo RV resort park but if youโ€™d like hiking, fishing, kayaking, tubing, zip line and general back to nature, itโ€™s a great choice.

(Nearby casino too, if youโ€™re into that.)

I measured Harrisburg to Panama City Beach and it's 1000 miles. That means most of the Florida panhandle is in reach. Very nice part of FL.

New Orleans is about 1100 miles from Pittsburgh (and about 1250 from Philly), and is a fascinating city.

Jekyll Island (near Brunswick, GA) is also an interesting place to see once at least. Savannah and Charleston, as mentioned, are good options. For those, I would generally take I-81 to I-77 to I-26 (and thence to I-95 if needed) as my preferred route. There is a long grade down (going south) on I-77, but it's not at all unmanageable if one downshifts etc. appropriately and follows the speed limits, which are sometimes reduced due to (heavy at times) fog.

Pretty much anyplace north of Orlando and east of New Orleans would more or less be in your distance constraint. That covers a lot of territory.

Without looking at a map and trying to figure where 1,000 miles south turns out to be, I would think Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA? Both have lots of interesting things to see.
