Camping in the Dunedin/Tampa FL area

We are planning a camping trip to the Dunedin/Tampa area for March 2019. We have never camped here before, and we would like to determine 1) How soon must we book a RV site before March 2019, 2) Favourite camping areas in the Dunedin/Tampa area 3) Places to avoid in the area 4) Things to do when not attending spring training games
Thank You!

We enjoyed the Dunedin RV Resort. Convenient to the bike trail (which we loved). Also an easy drive to St Pete's or to Honeymoon Island (for the beach) and Tarpon Springs just north (worth a visit)(great Greek food). I find you do have to reserve early for the winter months in FLA. Need to have a 2nd, 3rd, 4th choice in case they are full.

Remember that Grapefriut League games are played to get a taste of how new players will do against competition. So between every inning they are doing warmups and the game is insanely long. Make sure you have good seat cushions and something for the less baseball crazy members of your party to occupy themselves with when they get bored.

Away from the field Tarpon Springs has good Greek restaurants and tourist traps. The beaches are good around Clearwater.
Currently planning for retirement.....planning to build a small home in Nova Scotia for summers and someday year-round. Trying to sort out a good way to spend winters in central Florida as I can't drive anymore.

KOA St.Petersburg/Madiera Beach is very nice.

Convenient to beaches, ballparks, downtown St Pete etc.

Nice amenities, kayak launch, heated pool etc.

Agree with the previous posters. Book as soon as you possibly can. Right now would not be to soon, if they will take the reservation. Here are a list of campgrounds in the Dunedin area you might check out: Caladeis Campground, Palm Harbor, Fl. Alt 19 and Tampa Rd. We stayed there once. Nice park, older. Reasonably priced for Pinellas County. Sherwood Forest RV Park. Across the street from Caladeis RV on Alt. 19. KOA of Tarpon Springs, on US 19 just south of Tarpon. New owners, totally refurbished. New electric, new plumbing and septic, new landscaping. Just drove through there the other day and they have done a nice job with it since they took it over about a year ago. A little pricey. $800/$1000 plus electric per month. But if you want to stay in Pinellas County, it's going to be on the pricey side. If you want to go a little north towards Crystal River, you can stay in a nice campground for about $650 plus electric. Rock Crusher Canyon RV Park, just east of Crystal River is where we are probably going to end up for next winter. We stay about 4 months. Parks listed in Pinellas County are within 5 miles of Grant Field where the Blue Jays play spring training. There are tons of other things to do in the area. #1 of course is the beach. Clearwater Beach has been named the #1 beach in the country. Another option that the locals use is Dunedin Causeway. The beach is not as sandy, but the water is beautiful. Innsbrook is a great golf course that Tiger and Corey just played at a couple weeks ago. Downtown Dunedin is a quaint little town with great shops and resturants and a great ice cream shop, called Strachen's. Many great resturants in the area, Frenchy's on Dunedin Causeway is a local favorite. LBC on US 19 Palm Harbor has very good food and live classic rock and roll bands on the weekend after 10 pm.

Definitely book as soon as you can. I live in the area and most RV parks and camping sites are booked solid during March. Lots of snowbirds and also spring break tourists.

March is typically pretty crowded with Spring Break going on at that time. I'd suggest booking as soon as you know where you want to stay and when you are coming. Can't help with a campsite recommendation as I live in the area and don't camp locally although we have stayed at Ft. DeSoto once and enjoyed it. There you definitely need to book ASAP as they are packed year round.
