Route Advice-S.Ont. to Mission TX

Good Morning

Greetings!
We are Bob & Cathy from Grand Valley,On,Canada.

My wife & I will be travelling from Grand Valley to Mission Texas, leaving
either Sat., Jan. 6/18 or Sunday Jan. 7
Aside from the current deep freeze everywhere, they are calling for 10-15 cms of snow
in the London area on the 401.

I had my route planned for 401 to 402 to Sarnia, then South after crossing the border
via Cincinatti,Memphis,San Antonio,Mission.

I'm now wondering if I'm better off going west from Sarnia to I57 near Chicago, then South
via Memphis,San Antonio, Mission.
The weather indicates somewhat milder temperatures.
I'm just not sure about the Sarnia to Chicago section.

Does anyone have any input on this?

Can't wait to leave!
With the windchill they're calling for -32C (-25.6F) tomorrow.

Thanks
Bob

Thanks almcc. Sounds like we should stick with the 402 route that we know.

We cross at Windsor, I75 southbound is closed for a year or two so you will detour to 475 if you go across the toll road from Toledo to 69 south. The bridges in Detroit can ice with lake effect snow.

We're also coming from Southern Ontario in the next couple of weeks. I'm wondering if we should stay on 401 to the Windsor/Detroit crossing, or use our usual 402 to Sarnia/Port Huron? 402 is pretty bad at times in the winter.
We'd be heading across to I69 and down to Auburn IN the first night.

Drove straight through DFW without slowing down on the way to AZ in November.

We're planning to spend a few days in San Antonio, followed by 5 weeks
in Mission,so what do you think about this route.

Your route to Texarkana then:
I-59 S to Marshall
43 to Henderson
77 to Lincoln
21 to 130 S
130 to I-10 to San Antonio
I-37 S to Mission

This last part was suggested in another post. The idea being to bypass
Dallas & Austin.

Yes that will work.., Dallas/Ft Worth, Houston and Austin is always a good. I-37 will get you to US77 close to Corpus Christi for heading back south.

We by-passed Houston this fall coming from Florida, went up through Louisiana to see friends in Henderson TX. Then west and south crossing I-10 @ Schulenburg TX on US77, then south to Victoria.

That's how we do it, we get south quickly. Memphis is relatively warm, but watch out for the frost on the interstates in the morning (a good indication is the tire tracks heading into the median or the side "ditch". Dallas/Fort Worth isn't as bad as going through Toronto on the 401 if you pick your time of day and day of the week.

X2 on bypassing Dallas and Austin. Actually coming south thru San Antonio is not too bad, But you don't want to go north thru there.

I try to stay away from the west side of Lakes this time of year because of the risk of lake effect snow. Even Lake Michigan can generate significant amounts of snow.

Bypassing Dallas and Austin is always good.
