Edisto Beach and Hunting Island SP, in South Carolina

Both parks were seriously impacted by Hurricane Irma and will be closed to the public for the rest of the year. There has been some discussion about the possibility of closing Hunting Island for camping permanently. This is the second time in less than 3 years the barrier island has been decimated by storm. The other 2 state parks on the ocean in SC, Huntington Beach SP and Myrtle Beach SP, are fine and operating as normal.

My Bad! I meant to say Hunting Island State Park and Edisto are closed until at least January, 2018. Huntington Beach State Park, just south of Myrtle Beach, is, indeed open for all to enjoy! Thanks for the corrections.

We have an ocean front site reserved at Edisto in March. Hopefully they'll have it back in shape by then.

Sure did enjoy camping in those oceanfront sites at Hunting Island while it lasted, though.

Couldn't agree more about closing Hunting Island to camping. Simply put, Mother Nature always wins! It is on a barrier island, the main purpose of which is to protect the mainland by bearing the brunt of storms! We have camped here as well, and have enjoyed our stays, but it is "mosquito central" - numerous sites always flood at even the basic thunderstorm, let alone a sustained rain. Hopefully logic will win out over desire in this case.

I wouldn't blame them for closing Hunting for camping. The island has been hit hard by storms for longer than the three years you mention. Lost a bunch of houses and rental cabins in years past. The amount of money already spent that now has to be spent again is staggering. They will have to build a new dune system to keep the CG from flooding each time a significant storm comes.

We spent a week at Hunting a few weeks ago and the campground turns into a mosquito infested swamp after a heavy rain. Sad as it was our favorite state park for beach camping.
