Anyone planning to head up to Rocky and Estes in October for the elk bugling and the last of the fall colour change, you'll need to take US 36 up. US 34 in the Big Thompson Canyon is closing again for construction, on October 2.
A 12 mile stretch will be closed for construction, from just west of the Dam Store to just east of the Mall Road in Estes, essentially the entire length of the canyon. Only residents will be allowed through, and only with pilot cars at specific times each day. Planned reopening of US 34 is June 2018.
Though a real inconvenience for residents and frequent travellers, this full closure for the winter and subsequent construction through the winter will shave 2 years off the entire project. The construction company has committed 150 workers to this project each and every day of construction, until the job is completed.
