RE: DISCUSSION: 8 ft + crew cab vs. SUV

Next truck will be a 1 ton (probably dually) longbed crew cab. I've got 3 kids and we want a 5th wheel for a cross country trip.

RE: Generator question

Don't know why you would want to run the A/C in the 5er while on the road. The residential fridge is not going to get to ambient temperature the moment it loses AC. Rather than the thousands spent on a built in genny money might be better spent doing a serious upgrade on the battery bank, along with a PSW inverter to carry the fridge on the road. He said he wants a generator so he can stop at a truck stop or other similar area and be able to fire up his AC for the night. That isn't "running the AC while on the road", nor is it something that $1200 worth of batterys and solar would solve. OP, it sounds like your needs would be much better served with a smaller and more affordable portable generator. I nice Honda 2200 for $1200 and an AC soft start would allow you to run one 15K AC the majority of the night. My biggest concern would be theft though. Portable gensets can easily grow wheels in the middle of the night in a truck stop environment.

RE: RV Flex Armor

Seams are always an issue on any roof. But claiming the standard roof is fine vs. Flex Armor is misleading. Sort of like claiming standard drum magnetic brakes are the same as disc brakes. Both Flex Armor and disc brakes are a significant improvement vs. the standard OEM counterpart. Never made any claim to the contrary. I simply pointed out that most failures of the rubber roof system are the sidewall connection points, something that Flex Armor doesn't suffer from. I am fine with the quality of the rubber roof, for the most part. It isn't the BEST system, but its included in the price, so it works fine for me. $500 to have Flex Armor applied around the roof/wall seams would be a reasonable expense and a significant upgrade. $5-6000 to cover the whole roof doesn't make financial sense for me. Just stating that it would be nice as an option. It doesn't need to be ALL or NOTHING.

RE: RV Flex Armor

I'd be a LOT more interested if they had a product that was about 8" wide right where the rubber roof meets the front, side and back walls. That is the weak spot in the traditional RV roof. The other 95% of the roof is perfectly fine. It would be similar to Eternabond tape application around the seams, but ideally look a little more professional.

RE: Rivian R1S

The ugly would be the virtue signaling part. If they looked like other vehicles they wouldn't have reached market saturation This quickly. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, isn't it? I think they look kinda cool. I like the LED lighting on them. I haven't spent too much time looking at them, but when I see one going down the road they don't offend me. Half ton truck just isn't enough for me and my family though, so they aren't something that interests me enough to dive further into them.

RE: Roadtrip by car vs RV, a couple of thoughts...

Valid points. Its more comfortable and we get much better mileage in my wife's van, but we enjoy our mattresses, our kitchen, our bathroom, our couch in the camper. With a family of 5 plus a dog, hotels would be crowded and expensive. Eating out 3 meals a day for a family of 5 would be prohibitively expensive. We do eat out more often when we camp, but we still have at least 2 meals a day at home. That adds up REAL quick! Its definetely a tradeoff between how you do it, but we enjoy the RV lifestyle and hope to continue to enjoy it for many more years. Maybe when its just the wife and I we may consider flying to some islands occasionally...

RE: Rivian R1S

Yah I get that. But quite often you see phrases like “it’s no good for towing”. Which is true…for some people. But EV’s can be great tow vehicles for some. Never a good idea to paint with a big brush. You seem to be projecting... The question asked never said anything about that. He asked how it handles heavy weight and cold weather. It wasn't a broad brush question, you simply took it that way. This is ridiculous. It was a question about the tow capabilities of a truck being dicussed in the Tow Vehicles section of an RV forum. You over reacted a little bit, just let it go...

RE: Rivian R1S

Maybe. But a lot of people tow light as well. Both the lightnings and Rivians have decent towing ranges when towing smaller single axle trailers. We saw one towing a [email protected] this fall on the Sunshine Coast. Never had a chance to talk to him. Think it was an American plate. He was coming off the ferry and we were getting ready to go on. Sharp looking little truck though. Kind of a darker green colour. Yup, and some people tow heavy. So it was a legit question. Not sure why people have their knickers in a twist over it...

RE: Rivian R1S

Is towing heavy a prerequisite to buy one? Most 1/2 tons just do groceries, soccer games, runs to Lowes and occasional boat hauling. I've had trucks for work transportation since 1995. Only stated towing for recreation in 2010 after I retired. I mean... this is posted in the TOW VEHICLES sub forum, so it seems like a legitimate question.

RE: My fault

Last year was an off year for us. Probably only had about 5 or 6 trips. Had our 3 week trip to Florida in February. Had our week long trip to the lake over 4th of July. Had a week long trip to Tennessee in August. I think we scattered a couple other shorter trips in, but cannot remember them now! Having a 10 year old playing softball and an 8 year old playing baseball has slowed us down some. Also, I'm getting closer to retirement and thinking about saving leave to go towards retirement...

$4000? That is a solution just looking for a problem.

RE: Bearings packed

It wasn't $230, he was quouted $400. That's $100 per wheel.:E Yup. There is a price to be paid to keep your hands clean. If the OP is willing to pay $400 to keep her hands clean, that is her choice.

RE: Harvest Hosts

Curious, are you finding lodges that offer power?

RE: Bearings packed

Wow, that's what I call price gouging. Considering it takes about one hour to do 4 wheels. I disagree. If those are posted prices, you have the ability to decide if you want to pay for someone to do it, or invest $10 and do it yourself. The OP, or whomever else, can decide if its worth $230 to pay someone else or get their own hands dirty. Its price gouging to sell water for $50/case after a hurricane.

RE: Pet Peeves in RV Parks

If people were more conscious and considerate of others around them, the world would be a much better place. I stress to my children the need to be considerate of others. I don't want to hear your music, so I don't turn my up for you to hear mine. I don't want to have your bright lights on all night, so I turn mine off unless we are doing something under them (dinner, cards, etc). I don't want to hear your dog barking, so I make it so my dogs don't bark. If we leave the campground, we turn the radio on inside and close the blinds. Dogs can't see or see anything outside to annoy them, they won't bark. When we are outside, I immediately attend to my dogs if they bark incessantly. It's really not that hard. Be considerate, think of others and treat people how you want to be treated.

RE: Filtering Our Diesel Storage Tanks For on Road Use

And people think oil companies are evil for the few cents a gallon they make. For a product that they actually produce! The gov't is taxing it and making much more money off if it and they don't produce any of it!

RE: Filtering Our Diesel Storage Tanks For on Road Use

Ram has the best OEM filtration system out there. You don't need anything else. Change your fuel filters every 15K miles and enjoy your truck.

RE: Pet Peeves in RV Parks

too meny campers, I like to be alone .if you want people next door? stay in town. Ha, I came here to say "people". I don't like people. I like going to James Island Campground during the week in March, there are usually 5 or 6 open sites between campers that time of year. Plenty quiet!

RE: Ants in the RV a good thing for once

thread derail/ I have an almost 4 year old daughter that absolutely LOVES tooting. So much so that we call her "toot-toot". In church last Sunday the preacher said "tutor" and my daughter put her hand over her mouth, giggled and said "tooter". Thankfully I didn't hear that, but heard my wife struggling not to laugh. She told me and I laughed too... but it would have been way worse if I had seen/heard my daughter's reaction. Back to the topic...

RE: Harvest Hosts

Good info. I never liked Walmart as all night traffic but that changed with covid. And some Walmarts are actually nice, like Ticonderoga, NY. Where are these parks $20-25 night with electric? I'm all over that! Im going cross country in spring. Planning mostly one and two night stops on way out and back. We are planning a cross country trip in 2026 or 2027. I am researching things like Harvest Hosts for a variety of reasons. I like the idea of finding an off the beaten path place for a night or two, every 3rd or 4th night. I'm thinking I need at least the ability to use a generator though.
