RE: Stay off the ice! 3 Trucks and TT go through ice into lake.

We learned our lesson before anybody got hurt thank goodness. We were running snowmobiles on the lake and had a river of water follow us everywhere. Managed to get five machines stuck but everybody got off safely. However, every year somebody gets killed falling through the ice or by avalanches.

RE: Route Lethbridge AB to Portland suggestions

I-15 to Pocatello then west on I-84 is a relatively easy run. However I-84 was hard on the kidneys although it may be improved now. Man it was rough in an empty 5 ton.

RE: Required hitch for 6 3/4' bed

If the front corners of the trailer are cut away you should be alright in most situations. An automatic slider is great for peace of mind if your credit card can take the hit but not always necessary.

RE: Ram box on short bed - ill-advised for towing a 5th wheel?

Take a close look at the front corners under the nose, if they are swept back you should not have any problems. Otherwise go with an automatic slider. I can't reach the pins on my manual with the trailer hooked up, the cab has a dent as evidence, so I have to be very careful.

RE: is this enough truck to replace my F150 ECO?

Neigbors would hate you pulling out at 6 a.m.

RE: Adding air bags: can that increase payload capacity?

No. Air bags and other mods add to the stability but do nothing for load capacity. The tires, brakes, frame and other components remain unchanged. The door sticker remains the guide in the event of a police check or worse yet an accident.

RE: Do you need a special license to drive an RV?

That is a provincial regulation so varies. I looked after a fleet of light and medium duty trucks for a helicopter company, it drove me nuts trying trying to keep up with different regulations as they tried to out duel each other. I don't need a special license to drive a moho but must have a special endorsement or class 1 cdl for a trailer over 10,000#. Air brakes also require an endorsement but I don't know if it is a different course than commercial which is not really relevant for our purposes. Check with your dmv for the final word.

RE: Road Trip! BC to California

We did it in 2010, I would not try it again. We lost 6 days of our vacation driviving the rather boring I-5,parts were scenic but overall it is mind numbing. For the limited time you have fly down and rent a car.

RE: Half ton towable fifth wheel

I would not do it but as long as you can hook it up tow anything you want behind your half ton. Fully loaded that trailer is almost 10,000# with 20% of that, over 1900#, on the hitch. That is too much for any 1500/f-150 regardless of what the saleman told you even with the 10 ply tires, air bags and genuine JC Whitney doule blowdown genuine chrome plated shccks. Coming down an 8% grade into a 40 mile an hour wind gust will give you religion.

RE: Marinated Hotdogs

I will eat a hot dog done until it splits on a stick over a campfire. Drop it on a bun, add mustard and I'm happy. I don't grill 'em, fry 'em or worst of all boil 'em.

RE: I-84 from Connecticut to New York. Issues?

I have been on I-84 in the Portland OR area, a bit busy at times is an understatement.:B I can only imagine the north east and shudder.

RE: A fall week in the Kootenays

That is a very nice trip, it is beautiful on a clear fall day. We went to Nakusp then swung south to Kaslo, Nelson, then Grand Forks. No shortage of wildlife on that route either.

RE: Onan generator

The whole operation shouldn't take more than 20 minutes unless Monaco made the oil drain and filter hard to access. OEM's are known to do that. As far as cost goes depends where you buy your supplies but don't cheap out. Clean oil and air are your best insurance.

RE: Hwy 97 BC to California

This is funny. I live in Enderby and am acquainted with the owner of that museum, he is quite the collector. BTW, to the op, you also posted in Roads and Routes which is where it belongs. I really liked this guy! Just a super nice down to earth fellow. My 23 YO daughter at first did not like the fact that I stopped there. The old guy came out and chatted us up. Next thing I know we were taking a private tour the museum. The guy was so interesting that my daughter really got into it. She even got to fly on of his flying lawn mowers. She was having so much fun that I thought she was going to mow the guy's whole yard! LOL Anyway for $5 per person this is a must see if you like old stuff that works! I could have stayed there for hours and so could my daughter! I'll tell Herb you called him an old guy! Just kidding, he is very personable.

RE: Hwy 97 BC to California

When are you planning to leave? If in the near future watch the weather forecasts as snow can hit any time. Also be aware chains are mandatory in Oregon but if it turns bad wait it out.
