I drove a Ford F-350 long bed for 20 years. It just takes some getting used to. I used it for everything. Get in the habit of parking a little further out. Stay out of squeezy spots. Measure your height and remember it.

RE: Price of camping
Recently I joined up with some friends at a fancy RV park in the wine country of California. It cost $75 a night and I could not wait to leave.
An RV park is okay of a night to recharge some batteries and take a shower. I like USFS campground and boondocking.

It boils down to personal preference. A car is light and fast. An RV is slower and comfortable. Go the the way you like. I don't think people really save much money with an RV. It is the wrong reason to own and use one. Take an RV because you like it.

RE: New to diesel fuel
It depends on the weather and how long your vehicle sits. Fuel stabilizer is a good idea in the off season. Diesel can grow algae in it. Hot humid climates are bad for algae formation. diesel additives will take out moisture which accumulates in the tank from condensation.
DEF has a shelf life of 6 months to a year depending on who you talk to. Add DEF when are ready to use your rig.

Dry it out religiously. I have a canvas wall tent that is over 40 years old. I always dry it out.
Pop ups are great in good weather. But they are too hot in the heat, too cold in the cold and too loud near traffic.

I have an RV and really like it traveling with my girl and three dogs. But for light and fast trips, I just go in a pickup. I don't tow anything. Sometimes I sleep in the truck with a canopy. Just bought a new Kodiak canvas tent. Even in my 70s tent camping is great except in really bad weather. Just bought a 1959 Coleman gas stove for $25. Bringing back the magic of the early days.
I don't camp much in July or August in campgrounds, too crowded. I like the off season. Boondocking is the main way I use the trailer or Forest Service in spring and fall. RVs parks are the worst except for getting some power and water.

Yes. Good sentiments. I just went on a trip to Elko for Cowboy Poetry. We take the car and stay in a motel. It is not ideal in winter with three dogs, but camping in an RV when it is below zero is a challenge.

The paved roads are fine. Most of the dirt roads suffered washouts. Bring a shovel, check the latest postings on the Park website.
The West Side Road is still closed. That is the main access road I use to find remote canyons on the east side of the Panamints.
Cell phones are of little use in DV. A sat phone can get you some contact, but finding anyone to come all the way out to Saline Valley is going to be really difficult. You might be able to get Search and Rescue. A wrecker to pull your truck is going to cost around $3,000 or more.
I got hurt once in a mule wreck a long way from help in eastern Oregon. There were no helicopters available. It took all day to get to a hospital. They drove me 100 miles on dirt roads with a busted femur. The fixed wing plane ride cost $15,000 and my insurance would only pay $5k
One final note, Death Valley is a dangerous place. Do not go anywhere near the back roads in the summer heat. I do not even drive through the Park in the summer months. The best time to be there is Nov to about early March.

Depends on location. On the West Coast diesel is often cheaper than gas. Diesel engines last much longer, they get better mileage, they pull better, and they are worth a lot more when they age.
There are gross savings, net savings and fuel savings.

Now I have just heard about using ammonia to power cars and trucks for the first time. There are a lot of smart people working on energy solutions in the US. EVs might be okay, but the real solutions are probably out there in the formative stages.
I have a certain warm fuzzy feeling that diesel technology will still be relevant well after I am gone.

I see no plan or intent to replace gas engines with EVs. Okay maybe in California. EVs are a tool in the tool box. They seem best suited for commuter vehicles in urban environments. Now there are conversion kits to power classic cars and sports cars with electric motors. EVs may just be a stepping stone to hydrogen powered cars or the next tech after that.
Diesel engines deserve some special mention, but don't seem to get much appreciation in the US by law makers. In Europe over half the cars run on diesel. All of the trucks. There are diesel lawn mowers and outboard motors most places outside the US. Diesel can be converted to hydrogen. They can run on peanut oil, waste cooking oil, fuel from algae and fuel from wood. Diesel tech will be around for a long time.
We are likely to have a mix of power sources for transportation for the next 20 years or so until one stands out and gets promoted by the government.

Colorado driving is not for the faint of heart.
Colo Native is right about Trail Ridge Road.
All of your proposed routes will work, but all require mountain driving skills.
RMNP is over rated because of the size of the crowds. I went once never to return when I lived there. I would encourage you to spend more time in the adjacent National Forests and less time in the Park.

Lots of the trail in on private property. Some is covered by modern highways. I like the area around Ft Laramie and the wagon ruts near Gurnsey. Register Cliff is worth visiting.
