RE: Absolute positively the worst road ever

enblethen - that road would have made Highway 104 like a straight flat interstate. I asked about the Fam Camp wondering if you've been to Widbey. Other than the sounds of freedom, we love that FamCamp/campground.

How to update my profile?

Does anyone here know how to change their profile? Mine is outdated by about 5 years

RE: Absolute positively the worst road ever

Some of you have missed the whole point of this post. The question was about YOUR worst highway, not to argue my opinion of my worst highway. We've logged probably 200,000 miles of motorhome/towing driving so that does warrant an opinion.

RE: Absolute positively the worst road ever

doxiemom11, we checked Hwy 84 on all our resourses and saw that it was a good highway, being why we chose it. We were PUT on Hwy 104 and my message is: Horrible worst ever road in 27 years of traveling and probably 200,000 miles.

RE: Absolute positively the worst road ever

enblethen, our Rand McNally shows the chosen route as a blue or a green. We honestly thought we were being sent to Hwy 84. You know how the GPS will send you on loops through towns to get you on your chosen route... it was too late by the time we realized we were not on the intended route. We certainly would not have gone on 104 on purpose. Can't always trust the lady in the box!!! Do you frequent FamCamps?

RE: Absolute positively the worst road ever

You are right accsys. That is why we bought the Motor Carrier's Atlas. We were leaving out of Las Vegas, NM and at the time figured it was a short cut to get us to our road to I-40. By the time we realized we were in deep yogurt there was no where to turn around. I wrote this as a warning to anyone who might get on this highway by mistake. DON'T DO IT!!! Experience is the best teacher. The road we actually wanted was Hwy 84 the connector to I-40.

RE: Absolute positively the worst road ever

enblethen, our GPS is a Rand McNally for trucks and Motorhomes. It has our length, and how high. It won't take us to low overpasses, etc. Since our bad experience on 104 we bought the Rand McNally Motor Carrier's Road Atlas. A road that is suitable for a trucker to use is outlined in orange. If it doesn't have an orange line, we don't use it. Hwy 104 does NOT have an orange line!! We have no idea why 'She" sent us on that road!!!

RE: Absolute positively the worst road ever

Sorry Paulj, we drove it, didn't view it on Google Map. I invite you to drive it and then tell us what YOU think. You actually make me laugh to think you can discribe this road from a computer view.

Absolute positively the worst road ever

What is the worst road you've ever traveled and why? A couple of years ago we were leaving Las Vegas, NEW MEXICO trying to get south to I-40. Our GPS put us on Hwy 104. Trusting our GPS (never again) we didn't question 'Her". Figured it was one of her short cuts. Well let me tell you, Hwy 104 is one hundred and four miles of pure hell. Two lane, no where to turn around, mountain road with switchbacks (fun in a 40 footer towing) no guard rail, 8,9, and 10% grades. WHITE KNUCKLE all the way and all day with 10 and 15 mph curves. Unless you are a gutsy dare devil avoid Hwy 104 at all costs. It was a shear nightmare. What is your worst highway ever? Maybe you can serve as a warning as I hope I did.

We had planned on staying at Holloman AFB for the trip out to the Trinity Site but have decided to stay in Socorro at the City of Socorro Rodeo and Sports Complex instead. Has anyone stayed there and what is your opinion? Thanks!!

RE: The Trinity Site

A little side note for those who have not been to White Sands...several years ago we were walking on the dunes not realizing one of the meds I was taking had a warning about being light sensitive. The white sand is so bright that by the time I got back to the Jeep it looked as if I had the world's worst case of measles. The red spots lasted for several days so read your medication warnings before visiting White Sands.

RE: Escape window falls out

Reading your experience causes more concern for if we might have done that kind of damage. Glad our's is a diesel class A and not the fiver you passed!!!

RE: The Trinity Site

Wow Williebago! That does sound interesting but is it possiple to do? They are in opposite directions and miles apart. We figured a day for each.

RE: The Trinity Site

Thanks for more suggestions wallynm. We've been traveling for 27 years and it is hard to find new places to explore. Being retired military we've done all of your above suggestions. Shoot out anymore you might have - might be one we've not done. Thanks again!!!

RE: "Leather" coming apart and peeling

ScottG, that was two very plush Captains chairs, ($950 each) but oh so comfortable for hours of travel, bench seat dinette that makes into a bed and theater sofa. Sofa has a wide fold down arm that makes it three seater. So far we are very happy with all of it. I forget what the labor was but with the wiring etc. etc. we didn't think it was too bad. Bradd and Hall were nice to work with.

RE: "Leather" coming apart and peeling

ScottG, our first signs were the arm rests on the Captains chairs had fine hairline cracks. We covered them with long tube socks thinking that would be the end of it. WRONG ANSWER! Next the sofa showed hailine cracks that became larger cracks that started to peel. At that stage we took a detour to Elkhart and ordered all new furniture from Bradd and Hall. The theater sofa was on back order as they had sold so many of them to people like us. We lolly gagged around the country until ours came in. Within a day the old furniture was removed and replaced with our beautiful new furniture. End of story. Very happy with the new and ticked off at Fleetwood who basically told us we had what we had...$8500 later!
