RE: A traffic mess in Moab

I've been to Moab twice. In 88 we drove in on 191, and after a brief stop at the visitor center visited Arches. We used BLM campgrounds on the river. Even when going up to Island In The Sky I bypassed most of 191, using Shafer Trail and Long Canyon. In the mid 2000s I skipped 191 north of the river entirely, going directly to Dead Horse Pt for camping, and down Long Canyon (under the newish bolder). After a brief stop in town for lunch and groceries, I took 128 to Castle Valley and looped around town via the La Sal Mtns. Admittedly both trips were in small campers (by RV.NET standards) - a 4x4 pickup with popup camper shell, and a CuteUte (with RT4WD). When complaining about how ugly the town is, keep in mind that there have only been two businesses there - mining and tourists. Most of the roads/tracks originated with uranium prospectors, and pretty potash ponds are only remaining industry. And tourists come to sightsee and play outside of town.

From Panaca NV 319 climbs gradually to the Panaca summit, (2000ft climb in 12 miles). A bit of winding road through the juniper highlands, but no major curves or grades. Then downhill and straight to CC. Basic western 2 lane highway.

wsdot 410/123 web page park road page The park page lists a tunnel height for 123 (and Stevens Canyon). The tunnel on 123 is 2.7 miles south of the 410 junction (form Google Maps) I don't recall any tunnels on 410, or if there are any they aren't very noticeable (in a car).

RE: Hwy 95 though Idaho November

Slide is up by Riggins, ID. OP plans on going south from I-84 the way I understand it. Slide is north of I-84 like 100 miles. You may know more about the OP than is obvious from the post, but I don't see any mention of I84 or first passing through Oregon. So I assumed they were thinking picking up 95 further north, such as Spokane or Lewiston. US95 south of I84 remains of Idaho for only 60 miles (out of a total of 500). I was going to say that's pretty flat, but I see from the map it has a 1000 ft climb over a ridge. When I drove to Jordan Valley some years ago I went through Succor Creek, bypassing that part of US95. In terms of road conditions, weather related or grades, it's the central part of US95 that should be of most concern. The main grades pass in and out of the Snake and Salmon River valleys. One spring when I vacationed in the Idaho mountains, the main state park at McCall didn't open until after Memorial Day due to lingering snow. That's somewhat higher than US95 at NewMeadows. Later we encountered snow flurries at Lost Trail pass on US93.

I'm confused. First you worry about I84 heading west, with a longish 6% grade (max freeway) down to Pendleton. Then you say, oops, you are worried about the east bound trip with the climb. Now you are asking about an alternative west bound route? Do you realize that after Bend you get to climb again to a Cascade pass, followed by a much longer drop to the Willamette Valley. And then another climb over the Coast Mtns?

Put you RV on a barge and go up the rivers to Lewiston. Then you only have the grades out of that valley to contend with. :) At Pendleton you are near sealevel, near the Columbia River. To get to the upper part of the Snake in Idaho (Boise etc), you have to pass through Hells Canyon, or cross or bypass the Blues. Even if you took US97 south you have a significant climb. US20 east from Bend doesn't have much grades, but Bend area itself is around 4000 ft.

There is one major grade near the state border - down heading into Oregon. The view may be more unnerving than the actual grade. Otherwise the main issue is distance between fuel stops. It's one of the longer stretches in the lower 48 without fuel.

Be sure and check with the Oregon Health Dept . regarding the New Port numbers on the Virus. Last I heard Newport was a real hot spot in the number of virus cases. Compared to most Arizona counties, Oregon is quite low.

https://www.ktvb.com/article/news/local/riggins-us-95-highway-rockslide-road-closed-boulders-detour/277-b48647cf-7bc5-473d-8612-3c04af6e0660 mentions a couple of detours Old Pollock Road (daytime use) - this a 4 mile road on the other side of the river, local road, most likely gravel or oiled gravel. French Creek Road - for 4x4. Years ago I drove north from McCall on the Waren Wagon Rd but turned around at the Burgdorf Hot Springs, due to lingering snow and rain. French Creek is a switchback road down to the Salmon (4500 ft drop in 16 miles). I read someplace that this was the way north from Boise before US95 was put through.

US163 is federal highway. The monument mesas are off in the distance on either side as you pass though. I'm sure you'll see signs at the Gouldings turn off indicating what is open or not. Looks like Gouldings is open, but the Tribal Park on the other side of the highway, with the best tour views is closed.

21 Stanley to Lowman crosses a broad pass, just a 500ft climb from Stanley, but otherwise follows a river. 21 south from there has a more serious 1800 ft climb before dropping toward Boise. Banks-Lowman Rd, Cty 17 may have been a FS, but now it is nice paved. It continues to follow the river. At Banks it meets 55, a major highway from Boise to McCall. 55 leaves the Payette at Horeshoe Bend, followed by a modest pass. Other than potentially heavy weekend holiday traffic on 55, this should be the easier route, without has much of climb. Distance is nearly the same.

US95 north out of Lewiston does climb significantly, though at modern highway standards. Other routes out of the valley climb more gradually. Clarkston is just across the Snake, so there's no climb. US12 on west does climb to the same area plateau level, but takes longer. I suppose I shouldn't mention 128/3 south. It's more direct (half the miles cf to Walla Walla. But there is the big twisty drop to the La Grange River (aka Rattlesnake grade). Overall amount of climbing is less. Lewiston is 700ft elevation, lowest point in Idaho, Joesph is 4000+ ft, so you'll climb regardless of route.

In L&C days, the easiest route (by foot/horse back) was along the ridge top, not the valley beside the river. Steeper grades, but not as brushy.

The WA trouble zone is King and surrounding counties. Rural areas are lightly touched. So avoiding I-5 might be wise, unless you run into panicking locals. There's no panicking in the Puget Sound. Yes things are pretty quiet. Look at WSDOT traffic and web cams to see for yourself. The latest I read, the state is sending some ventilators to NY because the immediate need isn't as high as anticipated. The governor is concerned that the rest of the state isn't taking the social-distancing as seriously. Maintaining distancing at popular parks and trails is also a concern; all fishing access was closed down a couple of weeks ago because of crowds.

RE: Hwy. 95 in Idaho

US95 starts on the Snake River, and crosses mountains and uplands, while the Snake flows through Hells Canyon. Along the way, 95 travels along the lower Salmon River, a major tributary. Lewiston is the lowest point in Idaho. So the grades are mainly the result of passing in and out of those river valleys. The drop from New Meadows to Riggins on the Salmon is relatively long and gentle. The climb at White Bird to the Grangeville Plateau is more noticeable. Another long drop to Lewiston, and again the climb north out of Lewiston is significant. Google Maps with terrain mode gives a good idea of where you are crossing in and out of these river valleys. Directions in Bicycle mode show an elevation profile. The only alternative is I84 well to the north west, and US12 back east. That has freeway grades, but actually climbs higher. At Whitebird there's an old grade, that is longer, gentler and twistier, designed for old cars with a lower power to weight ratio. It passes a historic battle field. There is also an old grade north of Lewiston.

RE: Hwy 395 North through Oregon and Washington

US395 in Washington is quite flat, and divided. About half way up it joins I90. I don't see the point to turning east on 12 and then north on 195. That gets you deeper into the Palouse. I have enjoyed taking 12 to Lewiston, but that was on the way to the Snake/Salmon River country, not points north. The hilliest portion of 395 is northern Oregon, between US20 and I90.
