RE: Lightning Protection

Pretty good info here. I'll bet that the chances of getting hit by a Egyptian truck driver having a heart attack on I-10 in Louisiana is probably 10 times greater than a lightning strike.

RE: Replacing 12-volt batteries with 6-volt

Yup kinda and I hated it. Had one 12 volt from the factory. Added two 6 volt GC2 batteries to power my inverter. . They constantly needed water and could not handle the draw from my 2000 watt psw inverter. Swapped the whole thing to 3 AGM 12 volt deep cycle batteries in parallel and couldn’t be happier. My solar charges them faster also. Define "constantly needed water". I have 4 GC2s and add a small amount of water about every 2 months. I suspect something is overcharging your batteries. Right after I put the batteries in (4 years ago now), they needed water regularly. Found out that the solar panel the PO installed have no controller and there was 19 volts going to the new batteries.

RE: Be careful out there. There are some bad people

I sleep with 3 dogs and carry a heater. Nobody sneaks up on our rig. Good advise. You don't want to get cold while boondocking.

RE: Southeast Massachusetts to Nashville TN

Our route through there is I-195 to Providence, then I-95 to Old Lyme CT, CT 9 to Middletown then 66/I-691 to I-84. They just finished rebuilding I-84 through Waterbury and Danbury, so if you've been avoiding it, it's better now. From there you have a couple of choices. You can stay on I-84 all the way to Scranton to pick up I-81 or take US209 down the Delaware Water Gap and pick up I-80 to I-81. The roads around the NYC metro area are pretty dismal. The new Tappan Zee bridge is great, but the roads to it are still 3 lane and very crowded.

RE: Winterizing Washer

Most likely the water supply lines to the washer will be at risk and not the washer itself. Mine gravity drains the internal piping in the washer as soon as the cycle stops. Running the dryer then pretty much dries out the washer. Of course, paying a tech to pull the washer out and repairing the supply lines would probably cost more than the Splendide. If you're serious about not using the pink stuff, pipe a drain into the fresh water supplies.

Cousins of a friend of mine. It just sucks.

RE: Allison 2500 downshift issue

Does the 2500 have a mode button? On the 3000, if that is pressed it delays the downshift (kind of like Eco mode) to prevent constant downshifting on gentle hills. The display should say Mode On or something like that. It's possible that the ECM has been programmed to turn that on with the cruise control.

RE: Alternative satellite option?

I have a Pathway X2 and frankly, half the time it ends up on the roof to get the extra angle. It does get both arcs and that's a plus, however, there are places where you cannot get the arc that the local stations transmit on. This happen to us in Rapid City SD. If you don't already have a WiFi solution, consider ToGo

RE: Sewer drain is lower than the dump drain.

I've been at sites where the sewer tap is high, but never higher than the bottom of the tanks. The stuff still flows, and if what's sitting in the slinky is an issue just drain the hose hand over hand or build a bridge.

RE: fridge removal and replacement

The shop at the RV store where I work usually takes them out the nearest window. It takes the about 10 minutes to remove a window and about a half hour to re-install it. They take the fork lift and extend the forks into the coach, hoist the fridge up onto the forks and back it out. This may be your biggest challenge doing it this way, unless you have a fork truck that is.

RE: Mobile hot spots

We are currently using Verizon Wireless hotspot on the FMCA "unlimited" plan for $50 a month. The unlimited is in quotes because they throttle above 25 gig. If you can get AT&T at your winter place, I'd consider Winegard's ToGo. WiFi and cell antennas and booster, built in wireless router and actual unlimited data for $360 a year. The ToGo itself is around $400.

RE: Doom for the RV industry???

Or the manufacturers could make sure their products are built well in the first place. Why is that so hard to do? Because no one will be able to afford to buy your product. You can get a well built coach right now... from Marathon, Liberty, Country Coach etc. Just bring your checkbook.

RE: Doom for the RV industry???

I don,t see the doom, maybe now we,ll get some quality in the making of rv,s .remember the rust buckets the auto industry put out in the 70,s Well, unlimited liability put the brakes on small airplane manufacturing in the 80s and 90s. Cessna and Piper virtually halted production of 2 and 4 seat planes for 15 years until they got tort relief. The new aircraft aren't that much better than the old ones, and some say they're worse. They're certainly more expensive.

RE: OH where to?

You'll be camping at the dealer waiting for the bugs to get worked out. Sorry, but mostly true. This. We get new campers in the store all the time buying essentials for a trip. When they say "We're picking up our new camper next week and going to Yellowstone", I say "No, you're not".

RE: Night stops with RV

I'm hesitant to mention this because it seems to be a secret, but the parking lots in small municipal airports are usually empty at night and plenty big for campers. As with Walmarts, I check with the airport manager before pulling in but I've never been turned away.

RE: Preferred Topsail sites?

They were re-doing the front sites when I was there. I wasn't impressed with the method. Basically they dug out the tree roots that were pushing up the tarmac sites and replacing it with 6 inches of 3/4 stone. They weren't compacting it, so the first few occupants sunk in. Of course, this was nearly 4 years ago so I'm sure things have changed. We were in site #11 for a few days, then moved to #73 for a night. We liked 73 and the general area up close to the lake. Sites 100-150 looked like a long term stay area. There's a tram that runs down to the beach and the area has lots to offer. Be sure to take a ride down route 30A, and make sure you get breakfast at the Donut Hole. Edit: I found a pic of site 73

RE: Acadia NP - rv length

Anyone stay at bar harbor campground? Any issues with not getting a campsite since there are no reservations? We stayed at Hadley's Point right down Rt 3 from Bar Harbor CG. We went by Bar Harbor several times and there were always open sites (2nd week in September). I think the no reservations thing hurts them. When I made reservations at Hadley's, most of the other CG in the area were full.

RE: Need your thoughts

Fuel filter or fuel pump. The filter is cheaper and easier. Is there more than a quarter tank of fuel?
