Mixed. Even when we travel with a larger group we don't necessarily travel or stop together. Only thing set is the final destination.

As far as the work truck transmissions failing around 100k. Yes I've heard that about the 4L60 and talked to the local transmission shop when I bought my original Suburban. Their recommendation was to avoid the 1/2 tons with 4L60's and go with a 3/4 ton since they come with the 4L80 which is supposed to be much more stout. It was one of the reasons, but not the only reason that pushed me into a 3/4 ton. Our trucks are 3/4 ton. I don't know if we were unlucky or if others have encountered this but our non HD 2 wheel drives came with the 4L60. Still great trucks we just encounter heat issues around 100K miles.

Our work trucks have towed all their life and all have the 6.0 with the 4L60 4 speed automatics with factory cooler and tow package. All at 100K miles starting having transmission heat problems. Had the transmissions rebuilt and problem went away. At 200K same heat issue and same fix. At 300K same heat issues and same fix. At 400K I guess we know what to expect :):):)

94-D2 thanks for the info. These look like the same CVC the DOT officers gave me when I was researching double tow in CA. Based on these they stated that if I was in a "pickup truck / motor truck" and appeared to be under 65' they would consider it legal.

Two limiting factors. How the ladder is attached to the camper and the ladder rung capacity. Friends used one of the bicycle carriers made to attach to the ladder and while the ladder didn't pull away from the camper it bent both rungs it was attached to.

The only thing that changed was the 5th wheel restriction (10k-15k) that allowed a second connection to the 5th wheel only. That sunset in like 2008 or something. The lobbyist who facilitated the exemption bill wanted to tow his boat too so he got it in. CHP opposed that exemption but it flew anyway. That is gone now, so not an issue. Other than that, class A all through time as far as the last 30 years or so go. The requirement for a pick up over 4k to tow anything over 6K has been around for decades. So in your opinion is the not a "passenger vehicle" for towing more than one item still a loop hole? I have never been able to find any language in the CA vehicle code that specifically spoke of a recreational "pickup combination", "motor truck combination", etc. nor was any of the DOT officers able to lead me to it. All have agreed that for recreational 65' was the maximum length regardless. While I think it is goofy at least the non-commercial class A and FW endorsement are spelled out with weights and number of axles so we can avoid the muddy interpretations.

RE: Neat little fresh water in an ABS pipe idea

This was common on a number of our jeeps with roof racks. On a hot summer day in the desert you had to be cautious with the water temperature. We would take a 20' stick of 6 inch pipe and cut it into 5 four foot sections giving us about 20 Gallons of water at about 160 lbs. That is a gorgeous camper van. Wouldn't take long to find a buyer for that if he was crazy enough to sell it.

2.6 gallon portable toilet X2 on this. We carried one in our jeep and in our truck and in our cargo trailer. We picked ours up at wally world for about $40.

Double towing can only be done with a commercial class A with double/triple endorsement. Then, the combination can only be 65’ bumper to bumper. It has been many years since I towed doubles in CA and I wouldn't be surprised if the codes have changed but at the time the local CHP DOT advised that it was legal without a commercial class A. They stated that "passenger vehicles" could not tow more than one item but a pickup was not a "passenger vehicle" based on class and weight. They were adamant that the 65' length would be enforced and that both items in tow needed proper lighting, brakes, safety chains and proper couplers. Keep in mind at that time there was no talk of FW endorsements, non-commercial licenses and the like. I also posses a commercial class A so that may have played in my favor but no double endorsement. We successfully towed many miles through CA, OR, NV, AZ, NM, and TX with no issues.

He just needs to install one of these for the next time it happens. bed saver Its too bad they are not still available, its apparent many need one skipping the pull test :) I believe there was one called the Butch Device that prevent a dropped fifth wheel also . "Cutting edge" yes, but not always in a good way and ALWAYS at a cost. While I disagree with most of the decisions CA makes I find it a trade off for all the opportunities that these decisions make in redoing and rebuilding. I think most states have similar issues but CA tends to "boast their accomplishments" before they are proven to work. On a side note with all the solar panels being installed they are helping offset global warming by shading and cooling thousands of acres of Earth :):):). But by cooling these areas they are eliminating habitable areas for snakes and kangaroo rats which will keep them on an endangered list.

I resemble this story. Drove south to the hospital for the DW first hip replacement and was pleasantly surprised to find a spot close enough for her to walk from with the walker and not needing to find a wheelchair. Pulled in and got the walker out of the back of the truck and as usual she needed help with something unimportant so I went up to her side and helped. When I went back to get the walker it was not there. Not in the truck and not behind it where I was sure I had left it. Confused and not wanting to let the DW know what was going on I stood there in a dazed disbelief convincing myself that I must have left it in the driveway at home. About the time I conceded that I would have to admit my fault a nice gentleman walked up with my wife's walker. Sure enough it had rolled down to the entrance of the parking garage.

Driving school is going to be a tough find as their equipment meets the standards/definitions for a commercial class A and not the non-commercial class A. Most rental trailers will be stamped with a GVWR of 9,999 lbs. to avoid the hassle of a special license. The only CA license I am aware of that doesn't require you to be accompanied by a licensed driver is the class M. The driving schools may not be available for the training but they are in the business of making money so they may have someone that will accompany you for a fee or possible do a side job of training. Stop by in person and one of the instructors might be able to help. I have also heard of people stopping by a local truck terminal and finding a licensed driver that will help for a small cash fee.

The couple that bought my old Raptor with a 12' garage came and looked at it and agreed to buy in on the condition that there fiat 500 would fit. It loaded and fit just fine in the garage. I think it actually fit better than my Polaris Ranger and I bet the weight was about the same. Keep in mind you can always raise the front of the FW to help with the loading angle.

I have operated many different variations of Recreational Vehicle combinations over the years and have always done what I could to make sure I was within regulations. Most of it is easily interpreted but some areas are clear as mud. I have personally accompanied people to the CA DMV on five occasions for their non commercial class A driving test and only once did the DMV ask if they had a properly classed driver with them. I recommend having them with you just in case they do ask. My research showed the only time one needed to be concerned with GCWR was if you were a farmer or farm employee. One does need to be concerned with GVWR and more importantly the GVWR of the trailer. Over 15,000 lbs. on the FW and you definitely need the non commercial class A. I agree with the statement made about getting a class A and being done but unless your truck is registered as a motor truck or tractor truck and not a pickup truck I don't think the CA DMV will let you get anything higher than a non commercial license. I don't remember the exact weight to get reclassified but it is probably somewhere in the 12,500 lbs. range and the DMV fees will be noticeable higher and you may even need to put the CA numbers on the side of the truck.

I don't think the amount of axles has much effect on tongue weight. You need a certain percentage of tongue weight for any trailer to tow true and follow nicely.. I'm glad all my trailers did not read what you say. Some of my trailers, the tongue weight would not change MT to loaded. The last MT weighed 8,600 lbs, and loaded would have 45,000 on 2 axles. The tongue weight on the pintle was about 350 lbs. Wow that is impressive. Like I said I am just guessing. That would be cool to unhook a 45,000 lbs. trailer with out the use of a tongue jack. That weight and that little tongue weight I would picture the upward force from a bump in the road tearing the pintle or ball latch apart. The little I looked at stacker trailers when I was looking for my cargo trailer I ruled them out due to most advertising an unloaded tongue weight in excess of 1,000 lbs. and most having pretty substantial tongue jacks (weight handling wise). I have a baby DP so tongue weight becomes an issue. A super C or bigger class A and I wouldn't be too concerned with the tongue weight.

More axles just means more weight carrying capacity which in turn meant more tongue weight. I would imagine there is a ratio or formula and I am sure as you get into large trailers the tongue weight % drops but it is still going to be high on a triple axle stacker. I would guess, and yes it is just a guess, you would need 1500 - 2000 lbs. tongue weight to tow nicely.
