Used 6-point levelers to change a flat
I tried a few times years ago to jack up one side of the fiver with the Lippert 6-point leveler jacks, but they just wouldn't raise one side off the ground on a level-ish surface. The last time I had a flat I used my old Boy Scout trick of loosening the lugs and then moving the trailer forward to get the bad wheel over a hole in the ground to change it.
Last Friday I had a blowout and we were on pavement with no dirt nearby (no way to find a hole or dig my own). I had an inspiration though, and I'm kicking myself for not trying this sooner.
I just put a stack of yellow leveling blocks over each of the jacks and raised the entire trailer off the ground after I loosened the lugs.
The whole thing was done in under a half hour and my wife was dazzled: "Wow - New Personal Best". It made it a million times easier to get to the spare too.

We're heading out to camp and ride tomorrow afternoon.
Knock on wood, it should be the easiest prep ever. We got all packed up over a month ago to camp for New Year but we had mechanical trouble and couldn't go out. I just need to refill the LP since the fridge has been full this whole time.
I can't wait.

As for the water meter, I'm just curious as to how much water we are using. I want see how much we're using, so I'll know for any boondocking. Like how many gallons for 3 days and 2 showers...
There's certainly no harm in this, and it would be good data to know just from a curiosity standpoint.
I use a meter on my fresh water hose when I fill our tanks because it eliminates the guesswork. I've been doing this long enough to be able to estimate that one trip should be a 50 gallon trip when it's just my wife and I for a few days vs. a 120 gallon trip when the kids are all with us for a longer stay.
I miss the dump valve on our old trailer. It was a big 3" valve and I could empty the fresh tanks in 15-20 minutes. It was nice to start at zero and add exactly how much water we'll need. On our current rig I have to think back to the past few trips: "Well, I added 60 gallons last month and 50 a few weeks ago, but then we came home early and we probably only need another 40 for this trip..."

We go way back. He's one of the OG guys from back in the heydays of the Toy Hauler forum. Those were good times.
Hey Howard - I hope you don't take my "questioning" as "doubting". I'm just trying to wrap my head around one of the few systems in our rig that I don't understand. That and the crank-up TV antenna. Logically I know which direction I'm supposed to point it, but empirically my results say to point it 90 degrees the other way.
Anyway, I agree with you Jerry that Howard is worth listening to.

That makes sense for how the motor fried.
I'm still having a hard time visualizing the role of the hydraulic fluid in a rack and pinion system. It looks like the motor turns the pinion that moves the slides in and out.
The belly is inclosed and there's a limit to what I can see from the outside, but I still feel like I need someone to whiteboard the whole thing out for me.Now I cannot say they all are like this, but my rack and pinion kitchen and living room slides are pushed out directly by the hydraulic cylinders, the rack and pinion keeps both sides moving equally, as there is just one hydraulic cylinder pushing the slide out. The rack and pinion do no actual work, they just keep things aligned. That's how mine work anyway.
This just keeps getting interestinger and interestinger. That makes a lot of sense though. Thanks.

LOL. It's Scottish slang for playing the bagpipes (piping) while bringing in the haggis (piston) to the table.
Just what is it about the pipes anyway?
I attended a memorial flag ceremony for one of my Dad's old coworkers at Dad's old fire station a few weeks ago and they had a piper just like they did for Dad's service. There's something about having a piper there. As horrible as the squeal of the pipes is, it's just so doggone solemn. You can't help but get choked up once the piper begins.
The piper at Dad's ceremony almost twenty years ago was a grizzled old guy, but the recent piper was an adorable young woman probably in her early 30s. It was a little off-putting at first to see someone cute playing the pipes instead of an old dude, but she was tremendous. She did a great job. Not a dry eye in the place. It was pouring rain so we had to hold the service inside the engine room where the acoustics are enclosed, and her pipes absolutely rocked the station off its foundation.
Someone please talk about food before my eyes do that thing again.

I was at our storage lot yesterday and the wind kicked up. I swear I don't thrive on schadenfreude, but I can't help but drive through the lot on windy days to visit the coaches that I know are covered and see how bad they're getting damaged.
The one right next to mine was missing the big cover entirely and only had covers on the wheels and one on the windshield that was flapping and clapping grommets on the glass.
Two of "the usuals" had removed theirs since I last looked and I could see some scratches that showed why.
The worst though is the one where the side of the cover had blown up to the roof and the straps were scribing two large sets of semicircle scratches in the finish. The cover that was supposed to be protecting the RV was actually destroying it.
On the other hand, the graphics on the south side of our fifth-wheel are cracking and fading from the sun and it doesn't look as great as it should anymore. At least it's not scratched though.

Relationship between jacks and slides?
In most regards I feel like a captain who knows every inch of his ship and knows what sounds it should make and can intuitively tell when something's awry. But there's one system that I just can't understand, and that's the relationship between my slides and my jacks.
I had a blowout almost two years ago, and the flapping of the tire shreds severed one of the hydraulic lines to my Lippert 6-point jacks. I changed the tire and made it the rest of the way home. When it was time to unhitch, it dawned on me that the line had been severed and it was just bleeding fluid instead of deploying the jacks. So I kinked the line, tied it off with zip ties, and added more fluid to the reservoir so I could get the jacks down and unhitch the trailer at the storage yard and go home.
This was the beginning of the end of the motor that runs the jacks and the slides. From then on the motor was weak and strained. And worse, it would intermittently fail and just make a "clunk" sound of the solenoid instead of running the motor. It finally died completely before we were supposed to leave for our New Year's trip, but I finally got the parts to fix it.
Yesterday I replaced the motor and everything works fine again. Yay.
I wasn't even positive that the problem was the motor until I replaced it, but I was certain it was the motor the moment I removed the old one. I've never smelled something so fried before. Worse than Satan's armpits. I left the old motor on my tailgate while I was working on it, but I could smell the stench of the burned out grease standing by my front bumper.

So my question to the world is... What does this motor have to do with my slides?
It's obvious to me how it operates the jacks: The motor turns, either pumps or sucks fluid through the lines to deploy or retract the jacks, and the fluid visibly rises or falls in the reservoir like a high or low tide.
But running the slides in and out has no effect on the fluid in the reservoir. I suppose I should put my finger up there on top to feel if the motor even spins while deploying the slides, except my arms aren't long enough to control the slides inside the coach and fool with the motor at the same time.
I just can't for the life of me envision the relationship between the two systems. It makes no sense to me why that dead motor would kill the slides too.
What am I missing? Someone please enlighten me.

A few years ago we stayed at a little USFS campground called Buffalo Gap. It was the cheapest spot on our 11,000 mile trip and one of our favorites.
I think there were only three or four of us when we were there, but it was late Sept / early Oct so camping season was pretty much over.
This was a perfect launching spot for us to visit TRNP and drive part of the Custer trail.
We even stumbled on a gorgeous golf course at the end of our sightseeing just before sunset. My wife told me to stop so we could hit a bucket of balls, and the people there took such great care of us (we stink at golf). For $4 each for the balls, they also lent us all the clubs we needed, gave us each a bag of tees, and tossed us the keys to a cart since it was "such a long walk" down to the driving range. It was the best eight bucks I've spent in years.
On the down-side, make sure to do all your grocery shopping somewhere else, because there's not much commerce in the area. And don't pass up a fuel stop, because there's not much there. We had to drive 20 miles west (almost to Montana) to fuel up.
One of my other fond memories was my wife doing what seemed to me like a pretty dumb thing. The fall colors were just about spent and there were leaves all over the place. Our campsite was spacious enough that we could have fit three fifth wheels side by side and I guess the cover of leaves seemed messy to her, so she busted out the leaf blower and "cleaned" the site. I liked it better the way it was before, but I'm sure the wind put things back to normal after we left.
We loved it there.

Yes both kids have learned a sense of responsibility and pride and care…
And they’re kinda spoiled but both are working very hard at their duties and goals as young men. I’m as proud of them as they are of their cars.
How did he find a curb to match the car's color?
