RE: 1st night camping in our yard, 2023.01.24

Thanks to all, and for the input. Didn't think about killing the grass, a very good point! Don't want to be THAT guy. We should have already gotten doormats. They are on the list now. Been web surfing for what I need to know and saw that a lot of them had large carpets, but didn't notice the environment they were in. TTYL The large carpets are light, dry out fast when wet and fold up easy for storage. As mentioned, I agree about the carpets and grass but I think they do come in handy when on sand, packed dirt or crushed stone. (crushed stone is tough on bare feet) MikePutting an Awning mat on grass, is a variable, I've used mine on grass for 4-5 days, it did Not kill the grass, it Did turn it yellow, but it came back nice and green in a few days, if you leave it out for a week or more, you may very well have a mud pit. They do come in Very handy in places without manicured grass, like National Forest and Parks, COE parks, State parks, generally places with dirt, Pea gravel, sand, pine needles (and pine gum).

RE: 2023 camping season

What costs are rising that one wouldn’t incur at home?Campground prices , but that's only because we don't camp at home. Also, while gas prices are up (and still rising) everywhere, we use much less of it at home. Now, having said that, we're not staying home totally, not doing anything till May when we take an Alaskan Cruise, then probably do some local camping, (2 1/2 hours away) then Upstate NY for the fall.

RE: 2023 camping season

I wish MORE RV folks would 'cut back'.. ha, ha... That would make it easier to get reservations at the parks I want to go to.. I can't just pick up and go on a whim.. I do not wish to just "camp" in a parking lot type of park. I was paying $6/gallon gas last season, so I guess since eggs are now $3/dozen, I might just have to make smaller omelets on the Blackstone! :) Mitch https://i.imgur.com/XG8H0uzm.jpg?1 Hey Mitch...where ya gettin those $3 doz eggs? Walmart here is $5.80 doz! Is it possible to make a 1 egg omelet??:) I don't get concerned over gas prices, in fact, when towing, most always use pure premium.Walmart here is $5.80 doz! Jerry At these egg prices, I'm seriously thinking of giving DW a dozen eggs instead of Roses for Valentines Day. ;)

RE: 1st night camping in our yard, 2023.01.24

Not sure where you got those "Rule of 3's, They sound more like personal preference that actual rules, many folks do travel short distances, actually read someone only does 250 miles a day, I personally drive till I start getting tired of driving, maybe 500,have gone 600, but again it's a personal thing. Rest stop after 3 hours sounds reasonable, I have done less. Getting there before 3 seems a little extreme, especially in the summer when it still light at 9, setup doesn't really take that long. As far as minimum 3 nights, that's fair, but again personally I prefer 4-5 minimum as 3 just seems too short as it feels like I no more than got there and I'm heading home already. As for the rest, you learned just like most of us, luckily your trip was much shorter. I don't recall anyone who didn't forget something on the first trip. Good luck and Happy Trails.

RE: Cold Coffee

Late to the game, however I am curious... In my travels, I typically would have coffee as the locals, be it beans that were dried on a road and a path swept for a vehicle to pass, then swept back out on the road (cafe de calcetines, anyone?), or coffee in whatever big city and many ways in between... As example, here in the states, in New Orleans and only New Orleans, I will drink chicory coffee. That is probably the only flavored coffee that I would drink, and again only in Nawlins... I don't do ANY flavored creamer/whitener... Milk, cream, evaporated milk, powered whitener, sugar, black, strong, weak... I do quite a bit of 'espresso', in the afternoon, often changing brand, Pilon, Bustello are big and popular, no problem with small, lesser known brands. Currently 'La Llave"... I have an assortment of cafeteras and know how to make a lot of foam... Those that know, know what I am saying ;) For what ever reason (ok, lazy and like to have a cup ready when I awake...) I always have Maxwell House around, only fresh brewed, it's nasty old or reheated! Folgers seems to last longer, retaining it's taste... In it, Carnation Evaporated milk. I buy it by the case. Tried many other brands, too much to type. So, my question and please answer and be honest; What coffee do you drink that can be reheated and retain the taste? In my opinion, reheated coffee is like coffee that has been ground too fine,... very bitter, quite nasty... My honest answer as a coffee lover: I would not drink reheated coffee. I never have and never will Guy I Will, Long before I drink it cold. :p

RE: Cold Smoked Cheese

Do you use chips/sawdust or smoker pellets? I'd like to try pellets in my Lil Chief and/or my Masterbuilt Electric Barrel smoker. Both use a Cal Rod and a pan.I use Pit Boss Apple pellets in a smoke tube for my cheese, just as dedmiston does. The good thing about a smoke tube is, you don't even need a smoker, you can actually use it in a gas grill. (without the gas on)

RE: Cold Smoked Cheese

Just curious does the smoke flavor permeate all the way through the cheese? Or is it just on the surface and a few millimeters into the cheese itself leaving the center untouched? The smoke will permeate all the way, but you have to give it time, when I remove it from the smoker, I let it cool, which doesn't take long, then wrap it in plastic wrap, and put it in the fridge for 7 days, (this way the smoke works all the way through), then I vacuum seal it, ( because I can't eat 4 lb at once).

RE: Cold Smoked Cheese

That smoke tube is the greatest little gizmo ever, I only use one, and I use a better cheese, Cabot Seriously Sharp, but it really doesn't matter, you can smoke any firm cheese. Smoked cheese is awesome for toasted cheese sandwich, and is super great mixed with a couple other cheeses for Mac & Cheese. :p

RE: Crack in plastic shower wall Lance 1172

The one in my Class C did the same thing, i fixed it with epoxy, I'm not a pro, and it doesn't look like a pro did it, since DW and I are the only ones that have to look at, it really doesn't matter all that much, but it worked.

RE: Park pet peeves, Park owner’s turn

"The wildlife is wild. Your children cannot pet the elk, ride the bison, or take a bear cub home, so don’t try". Violation, or disregarding of this single Rule, Suggestion, Idea, or what ever, is probably the reason for most deaths or injuries involving wild animals in our National Parks and Forests. There are generally, signs around most of these parks, to the effect of, Caution, Stay X # of feet/yards away from animals, I have never seen a sign saying this is a petting zoo, yet people are seen routinely treating them as if they were. Some of these animals can kill you, some will eat you after they kill you.:R

RE: its about time

It will give more people the opportunity to get a site, as long as they enforce it, don't be like your cousins to the south, most of our Federal and State parks have a 14 day limit, unfortunately many times it's not enforced, or looped around, by playing the name game, this time, the site is reserved in hubby's name, next 14 days is reserved in wifey's name. Is it legal to rotate from name to name. I mean if they had a rule against it they would stop it wouldn’t they? If you are saying it’s a moral issue we have to realize that it’s 2022 lol. There are people in here that think that someone driving the speed limit is a nuisance and they should be driving with the flow of traffic even if it’s speeding Selective rules or morals I guess I contend its not legal to change names. If pk has 10 day limit after 10 days that RV must leave.... Changing names is not leaving. That would make sense, Again, IF it's enforced.

RE: CB radios - Do you use one?

I guess they may still be useful to some. but personally, I don't use one anymore, haven't used one in years, I have 3 of them, but have no idea where they are any more.

RE: Locked Out...Sorta

Hope you are headed back to the dealer! It would be complete BS if they did not take care of that any any other little details. I could take it back for about $80 in fuel and 4-5 hours of my time. Or, I can fix it myself for about $20 in parts (OK, $30 including a six pack) and 2-3 hours of my time. As long as you've got a six pack (or 2) you can't really count your Time, as some of that time is not dedicated to repairs. ;) :)

RE: Can toll booths read transponder w/C overhang?

they also make a transponder that screws onto your front license plate I had a lot of trouble with my windshield mount, behind the mirror, BUT, only in NY on the Thruway, sometimes it would read it getting on, but not off, other times it would read getting off, but Not getting on, went with license plate mount, and haven't had another problem.

RE: RV park "STANDARDS"

I like the the type of reviews that people go to places like the beach and complain about all the sand. Lot of people gives bad reviews for stuff that a compground has zero control over. Too much sand, too hot, too cold, too many bugs blah blah blah. I think some of these things are worth mentioning as an FYI, but I wouldn't ding a campground for things far beyond their control. That was the exact type of review at one of our favorite COE parks in Va., someone actually complained about all the leaves in a fully forested CG. How dare they put leaves in a forest. :S

RE: Escaping summer heat while in the southwest?

You are right on the money about how elevation helps with temperature. A couple of years ago I was in Phoenix and it was 113 that night the weatherman (they do the whole state) said it would be 114 in Phoenix and 72 in Flagstaff. Guess where we headed in the morning. BillSeveral years ago, we stopped at Havasu City to break up our trip from Ca to GC, We experienced the same sort of thing, We left Havasu at 115 degrees and got to the South Rim of GC 82 degrees. If we ever get back out that way again, we'll go to the North Rim.
