RE: Winter Cover

This isn't intended to be an anti cover lecture, as I think there are pros and cons to them. The decision also comes down to where you live and what climate you're in. With that said, after 10+ years of owning travel trailers and now a new 5th wheel, my personal belief is that in many cases, you're better off not using a cover at all. Wind can cause rubbing against the roof and fiberglass, there can be condensation accumulation and excess mold, and they're not the easiest darn things to work with. I live in the Pacific NW, so we get a lot of rain and some occasional snow and freezing temperatures. I keep my roof seals in good condition, and I haven't had any problems as a result of exposure to the elements. The RV techs I've worked with in the past, including a couple of dealers who sell covers, advised me NOT to use one. Again, I may feel differently if I lived in a baking hot climate where UV exposure is a concern, but all in all, for the vast majority of people, I don't think covers are necessary. That's especially true when you factor in that most people who own TTs and 5th wheels tend to upgrade them every 5-10 years.

Coiled outside shower

Another of my many stupid questions... My new rig has an outside shower with one of the newer coiled, quick connect attachments. I can't for the life of me figure out how to connect the darn thing. I push back the nozzle the way you're supposed to, but it doesn't fully attach. I was able to winterize it, but I got drenched in antifreeze because it wouldn't fully connect.

RE: Lippert ground clearance issue

It's only concerning to me because, 1) I don't want to accidentally tear off a jack (obviously), and 2) I'm about to have a gravel driveway put in at my home so I can park the rig there. The problem is, the rounded curb is pretty steep, so I'll probably need a ramp of some sort. Other than that, I can probably get by as is. I don't drive over too many curbs. Not intentionally, anyway. :)

Lippert ground clearance issue

Hey guys. So I used my new 5th wheel for the 1st time last weekend, and everything went pretty smoothly. It was my first experience with an auto leveling system, and man is that a cool feature. The leveling system worked perfectly, but I do have one concern. The rear jacks are installed to where there is very little ground clearance in their neutral (ready to travel) position. I'm talking like they're maybe only 6-8" off the ground. I asked the dealer about it during my PDI, and they said that they can't be raised, but after looking at them more closely last weekend, I'm not sure why. There are several available bolt holes on the bracket that would (I would think) allow me to raise them up another 6", but perhaps that would max out the available travel of the jacks? I'll try to snap a couple of pictures next weekend, but I'd sure like to figure out a way to raise these up a bit. Makes me wonder if the dealer said they couldn't be raised because they didn't want to deal with it on my delivery day.

bobbyg123, your problem sounds more like a lubrication issue. Both campers I've owned squeeled terribly. I had the dealer lube the rails that weren't exposed and that problem went away. I learned after the first camper to have the dealer do that before I took it off their lot. laknox, It could be clutch related. That rapid click when fully extended or retracted doesn't happen on that slide anymore. Gjac, your thoughts make sense too. Hopefully it's not a big deal and not too costly. As luck would have it, the camper is out of warranty by 5 months. I'll know next week when it gets looked at. I'll post to this thread to report what I learn. Hmmm...My dealer is over 2 hours away. Is this something I can do myself?

Not to hijack this thread, but I just took out my new Jayco Eagle for the 1st time last weekend, and while the main slide extended quietly, when I pulled it back in, it made a lot of noise. Didn't sound like banging, but rather a pulling rubber sound. Could that be because the seals are new? It was also raining, so that may have had something to do with it.

bobbyg123, many new RVs have a white drain valve for the fresh water tank. It is 1" or 1 1/4" with a pull rod just like the gray and black tanks. I found this situation on a new Artic Fox a friend had purchased. Looked everywhere underneath for the "old style" drain, saw this deal, pulled it, and I immediately had a bath! Didn't take long to drain. That has to be what's going on here. There's an unmarked white drain of some sort in the middle of the underbelly that I hope is the fresh water drain. I wish they would have marked it. Sheesh. It's pretty unnerving to pull dump handles for the first time when they aren't marked. I hope for everyone's sake that it's the black tank. :E

When I did the air only technique in my travel trailers, I was able to blow out **** near all of the water. What little was left in there wasn't going to cause a problem, even when the temps dropped and froze everything rock solid. I'm just concerned that my new 5th wheel will be more complicated, but I can't see why that would be the case.

I need to go through the manual extensively this weekend. This camper has a very confusing valve and lever configuration. It has a gray tank pull lever, a black tank lever, a 2nd gray tank lever in the rear of the camper for the 2nd gray tank for the outside kitchen. Then there's an unmarked pull lever that I "assume" is for the freshwater tank, but I'm not certain of that. And to top it all off, there are a couple of valves used to bypass the macerator pump. Who knew the step up to a 5th wheel would be this complicated?

Do you have 110v power at the storage site? I have wintered in cold country in the past. I added some heat tape and a small radiant heater to keep the inside temperature above freezing when I was not using it. I don't camp in the winter anymore unless it is in Arizona or Mexico. I don't have access to that. Honestly, I may just run the pink stuff through and keep it winterized, even when I'm using it. It's actually easier in many respects to bring a couple of 6G fresh water jugs for toilet flushing, hand washing, and military showering. Might be better to go this route until I'm fully up to speed on the new camper.

I think you'll find that most winterize with pink stuff. Some blow out the lines first and then push in pink stuff. But there's also people who just use air. The big challenge with air-only is making sure you get it out of all low points. The one issue I had was the toilet's water valve held water and broke one winter. $35-45 later and it was fixed up. Yes, that's a valid concern. My issue is that I store the camper off site for a few months and use it during the winter months. Using air only to winterize is so much easier for this, as I don't have to de-winterize by flushing the pink stuff out, and then reapply the antifreeze 3-4 different cycles of use. I'll probably continue to use the air only method, but I'm a stand up guy and will come clean to everyone here if I suffer a cracked line, valve, or god forbid, a water pump due to freezing.

Any of you guys winterizing with air only?

In my 10+ years of travel trailer ownership here in the Pacific NW, I've never used anything other than compressed air to blow out my lines and winterize. I haven't used any of the pink stuff, apart from pouring some down the drain traps and to maintain the toilet seal. I park my camper in Eastern WA for a few months each winter, where temps are frequently in the teens and below, and I haven't had any problems with freeze damage. Now that I have a new 5th wheel that I'll be winterizing for the 1st time, I want to revisit this logic to make sure I'm not running any risks. Do any of you simply use air to blow out the lines, on top of, of course, draining the water heater and emptying the tanks?

Do I need to pull the low point valves? If I blow air through the lines, doesn't that mitigate the need for pulling the low point valves.

Fresh water drain

So I’ve been going thru my new 5th wheel since taking delivery 2 weeks ago, and today I noticed some things about the tanks and valves that stumped me. Unlike my previous 2 travel trailers, this Jayco Eagle doesn’t appear to have a simple fresh water drain. What I mean is that on my travel trailers, there was a simple screw cap valve on the underbelly that I’d twist off to train the fresh tank. With this unit, I have no idea how to train the tank. Is there a pull valve or something? We’re taking our first trip this weekend, so I’ll finally have the chance to get familiar with everything, but the tanks are totally different than what I’m used to. There’s a fresh water, 2 gray tanks, a black tank, and macerator. That’s all fine and dandy, but how do I drain the fresh tank!!

Thanks everyone. I hear what you’re all saying, but my question is more conceptual. With the unit unhitched and supported by the landing gear, how does the lippert system level the camper without bending or breaking the landing gear? I’m not grasping how it can pitch the rig forward without causing damage.

Lippert auto leveling question

Continuing on with my “I just too delivery of my first 5th wheel” line of annoying questions, here’s another. My new rig came with the lippert auto leveling system, but we didn’t demo it during my PDI. It seems really easy to use, but I’m not sure what to expect the first time. I was told to completely unhitch (chock the tires, set the landing gear, unwire and pull the truck away) before leveling. What I’m not visualizing is how the system levels the camper without bending the landing gear. Does it completely lift the rig off the ground? Good grief, after 10+ years of travel trailering, i didn’t think that I’d have so many silly questions. I’m a greenhorn again. :)

Ok guys, thanks for the feedback. To clarify, it sounds you're suggesting that I fully retract and pin the manual locking section of the gear, and then lower the powered landing gear with the motor. Is that right? During the PDI, I seem to recall the dealer saying to raise the motorized landing gear to the "dust line" when I was hitching up, so I guess I forgot to power them down a ways when I was unhitching.

Landing gear question

So after 10+ years of travel trailer ownership, I took delivery of our first 5th wheel on Saturday. The hitching/unhitching process went pretty smoothly, but I have a question on the landing gear. My F350 isn't lifted, but it has bigger wheels and a fairly tall profile. During the PDI, the guys at the dealership advised me not to overextend the landing gear past 10-12 holes when unhitching, but that's impossible with my configuration. I'm stacking 5 lynx blocks on each side, and I still have to extend the landing gear pretty far. It's not a big deal, but it does raise some stability concerns. I'd rather not have the rig balancing like a jenga game if there's another solution. Any thoughts?
