RE: Acadia NP - rv length

We stayed a week at Smuggler's Den. Our group had the first two FHU sites on the entry road nearest the office. I would HIGHLY suggest this CG and sites. The pool is directly across from the sites as is a large grassy area for kids/dogs. Other sites are fine but some get a little tight. We had an excellent experience, and we drove through the other CG and didn't have remorse for our choice.

RE: Chicago

Going through Chicago on 94 on a Sunday morning (non-Bears home game) is quite easy. The other routes take you out of your way. Chicago is just like any other big city...avoid the rush hours.

RE: Road closure (detour) questions

I live in Kankakee, IL just north of US 24 and I-57. If the detour bothers you, continue north on 57 to the 2nd Kankakee exit (Rt 17) and head east. You'll come into Momence, then use IL 114 which becomes IN 10. You have a choice to take I-65 north to I-80 or stay on IN 10 and meander through Indiana to Goshen as you move east and north. Brian

Buena Vista CO area

I am having a difficult time finding good reviews online for a campground near Buena Vista. Here's a little about us and our trip: We don't have a generator and need power. We are 40' long. We are planning on four nights in the area to see Maroon Bells, Leadville, Snowmass rodeo, etc. We are coming from Ouray and will be leaving BV area to head to Illinois via US 24. Do you have any recommendations and reviews on a CG that has power and water and possibly views of mountains and maybe a stream? Too much to ask for?? Brian

RE: Researching Generators

Thank you for the responses. I've looked at the Champion 3500 dual fuel and like it thus far. In my reading, many state that the 15k AC unit can be run with lights. No one has indicated that the AC and refrigerator can run at the same time (I have a commercial home fridge). That got me thinking, can I run the AC via the generator and run the refrigerator off the inverter like I do when traveling?

Researching Generators

This past year I have found myself enjoying our earth away from campgrounds. I’m not ready to go full-bore with no power. What is a decently priced generator that balances cost with power with low noise? How many KWs will I need to run my “necessities” such as fridge, air/furnace, and other items? Thanks for your help. VERY green to this part of camping. Brian

RE: Tire pressure

Simple answer, always inflate to the max pressure found on the sidewall of the tire, but only when tires are cool. Underinflated tire sidewalls flex and build up heat, and that's what causes blowouts. So that's the actual answer to the actual question, everyone can talk about weight ratings and loads etc all day long. Thank you for getting the thread back on track...see what I did there? I inflated to 100 psi and made the 1200 mile trip to Acadia. Maybe I pushed my luck a bit being 10 under sidewall/sticker psi, but I did go 3000 miles last year at 90 without incident. I know....past results don't mean future success.

Smuggler's Den - Acadia

Just wanted to put a shout out to this very nice campground. I followed suggestions on this forum last year when making reservations. I made the reservation in July of 2018 and completely forgot about the site. Site 125 is a great site and SDCG is super nice. It is small, but has full hook ups, cement pads, a heated pool, and a very large playground area with adjacent pool. The CG is located close to the SW (quieter) portion of the island and only 10 miles or so from Bar Harbor. I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived. I must remember better!

Tire pressure

My new to me unit has Load Range G tires that indicate 110 psi cold max. I used it last year over 2000 miles at 80 psi as that was the pressure leaving the dealership. I’m headed out from Illinois to Maine this week. Do I jack them up to 110, keep them at 80, or somewhere in between? Thanks for your help. Brian

RE: Large Back Window

HoHum RV Park in Carabelle FL. Out the front window, but I guess you could back in. Wow!

Large Back Window

So for years my wife wanted the back wall of a camper to be all windows so that she can look out at the beauty. We purchased a new to us Cedar Creek last summer with a window in the back (happy wife = happy life). So, throw those suggestions up on this thread. Where should I camp for the view that beats all other views. Pictures would be wonderful as well! Brian

RE: Hwy 24 Ft Wayne to Peoria

In Illinois, US 24 is a two lane road with the speed limit at 55. You will go through small towns about every 15-20 miles with agricultural land in between. It's an easy drive - straight forward. You'll want to avoid it during planting and harvest time.

RE: Cold temp question....just in case

*** UPDATE *** I ran the furnace at 45 degrees with all the faucets and cabinet doors open. I placed a portable thermometer in a closed off access area where water lines ran (under bathroom but accessed through the outdoor storage compartment). The outdoor temp at 7am was 24. The temp in the living room was 45, and the portable thermometer read 44.5. Science experience completed. One more night of cold temps tonight before a warm up in the midwest. Thanks for all the feedback. Brian

Cold temp question....just in case

I THINK this is the right process, but I'm willing to risk some negative feedback in order to save my pipes. Temps will be in the mid 20s the next two nights. The 5'er has been de-winterized. I drained the fresh tank and hot water tank. I also opened up the low point valves and the faucets inside. I do have a dishwasher and ice maker so I will keep the furnace on at 40 just to make sure. Am i all good?

RE: NW Indiana to Bar Harbor

Do any of the interstates on this route in Massachusetts have rest areas with electric hook ups? Ohio does, and five other states do as well after searching for this.

NW Indiana to Bar Harbor

This is the vacation this summer. Reservations are made on the island already. We are staying at Lake Erie SP in western NY (90) on our first leg of the trip. 8 hours later will take us just west of Boston in the Lowell area. I'm having a hard time locating a CG in that area just for a stop over. I do not have a generator. Our daughter lives in Manchester NH one hour north. The question includes both roads and CG options for the 2nd night: 1. Don't worry about the tolls (my cheapskate side) and stay on 90 and 495 around Boston and into Maine? 2. Is there a recommended place to stay close to the interstates in the western Boston area for a stop over (no sightseeing)? 3. Jump ship, go north into southern NH for a landing spot for the night? Thanks for your help! Brian
