RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Hope everyone made it to Sevierville safely. We had our first frost last night. There is still some ice on the roofs here at 8:00 am. There isn't much change in Pickles. I have talked to 3 different Vetenarian clinics that are close by us. Non of them are willing to do the surgery on Pickles. The last Doctor I talked to is a specialist. He said if Pickles was a lab he would not hesitate, but because she is a small Pomeranian if it was his dog he would stick with Metropolitan Clinic that did the diagnosis. He said the 2 Doctors there are the best specialist and they handle all the hard cases. He also explained to me that if surgery is not done it could effect the Achilles' tendon if it has not already. He also said it after it is repaired it may happen again. He told me that he repaired 3 in labadores and 1 reinjured it in a years time. She is eating good now and drinking water. But you have to take it to her. I can tell it still hurts her as she tries to move around. So she really does not unless she gets excited so we try and keep her as calm as can be. She still is not doing her business as she should but is urinatining once a day. She did poop yesterday this was the first time since Thursday.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Pickles is doing a little better every day. She still will not move around. Her day is spending time in her bed when I give her pain medicine she sleeps. She usually sleeps on the bed with us but the last few nights she has been in her bed alongside of me. She does stay in her bed all night. She is eating and drinking but we have to take it to her for she will not walk as she is not supposed to either. I think she is starting to enjoy the waiting on her. This morning when I finished giving her the meds. I put her back in her bed and sat down next to her. She look at me and started licking her lips and sticking her tongue out. She wanted a drink of water so I had to go get her water bowl and bring it to her. She is acting like the pain is lessening so I only been giving her pain meds in the morning and before bed time. I think she knows she has us wrapped around her little paw and we will do what we have to for her.

Pickles is doing better. She is eating again and drinking a little. She still is not doing her business as much as she should. But did urinate yesterday once, that is becoming the norm. She does not appear to be in so much pain so I have reduced her pain meds hoping that she will start doing her business more often. The Vet clinic we just started going to will not do surgery for they do not feel comfortable doing the surgery that is required. I have reached out to the Vet clinic that we have gone to for 30 some years. The Doctor I spoke to is an older Doctor and he has never performed that type of surgery. He is going to discuss with the other Doctor when he returns to the office next week. We do have an appointment at the clinic that did the MRI and diagnosed the problem. Our consultation before surgery is not until the 24th of this month. With a surgery date to follow. At first we were upset because of the length of time. But we are at ease now as she is improving slowly and we can evaluate her and ask the question is surgery necessary. Her actual diagnosis Suspect superficial digital flexor luxation, right. Right stifle effusion, mild - possible cranial cruciate disease. Coco femoral degenerative joint disease, mild. It is the right superficial digital flexor luxation they say needs repaired. https://i.imgur.com/7qhMAF5l.png

Pickles is doing about the same. Heavily Medicated. She finally urinated about 1/2 hour ago it seams she is only going 1 or 2 times a day. They have diagnosed her with Suspect superficial digital flexor luxation, right. Right stifle effusion, mild - possible cranial cruciate disease. Coxofemoral degenerative joint disease, mild. Recommend Orthopedic Surgery.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

She is heavily medicated. She just received her morning medications. Which include sucralfate, Prilosec. Then her prednisone, liquid Gabapentin and tramadol. She still refuses to do her business like she should. I guess we have to continue to wait until she is ready. She is in her bed sleeping which is good so she does not do anymore damage. Hoping to hear from Vet soon.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Wow, at least it was not a spinal or disc problem! Yes very relieved that it was not anything with the spine. I was worried that she had spine tumors. They did take some spinal fluid and sent for testing, we should hear about that today. Hopefully we can find out from our regular Vet when and if they are able to do the surgery. Other wise we have to take her to the speciality clinic where she had the MRI and as of yesterday the earliest we could get in was October 22nd or the 24th. We felt that was to long to wait but may have to do that. Thanks to all for your thoughts and well wishes.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Pickles had her MRI today and nothing stood out. But why she was under they did find a displaced ligament in her right leg. So now we have to schedule her for surgery to get it corrected.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Dan I almost hate to bring this up, but sometimes the obvious is what we overlook. Have you examined her paws thoroughly for ticks or something else caught between the pads of her feet? I'm so sorry Pickles is having so much trouble. Wish they could communicate with us. Dale Dale that was the first thing we did before taking her to the vet. She had step on a thorn a few weeks back on her front paw. She started limping right away. I was able to get it out and she was fine. Thanks for the suggestion. This morning she will get the last dose of the consecutive 12 hour span of prednisone. She should have shown some improvements by that has not happened. She is in so much pain she will not walk. She does try sometimes to get next to us but you can tell she is in pain. We had her outside a lot yesterday trying to coax her to do her business. We tried several things that were suspected to us.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Pickles is not any better today. Last night she urinated all over the bed. it looks like she never moved as the wet spot was right under neath her. Needless to say we were up really early this morning. I heard from the Vet this morning that the radiologist did not see anything that stood out in the X-ray's. Tomorrow we take her in at 11 for a MRI to see if that can tell us anything. She refuses to walk and because she will not walk she will not do any business outside. The little bit we can get her to walk her right leg is up or she is limping really bad and her tail is between her legs. You can tell she is in pain.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Pickles is still having a rough go this morning. She is moving some on her own but she moves like she is in pain. Her back is hunched as she favors her right hind leg. My niece who took the x-ray said she screamed when she positioned the leg for the X-ray. Pickles still will not move around outside to do her business. She is starting to hate me because I have to force her medication down her as she turns her nose up at food most of the time. Usually she moves around in bed at night. But last night I put her blanket on her around midnight and this morning when I got up around 6:30 she was still in the same spot with the blanket. As each day passes I start to get a little more concerned about her as there is no signs of improvement. I can only hope and pray that by Thursday we see some. Other wise she goes back to get the MRI. The Lord only knows what they might find. Dr. Doug if it is a disc problem in her back or something like that effecting her right side what can we expect that needs to be done to correct it?

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

We arrived back home about 1 today and took Pickles back to the Vet. They did blood work and took some x- ray’s. Blood work was good the x-rays did not show anything. They changed her medication to a steroid, they think it might be some type of nerve pain. She did scream when they took a side view of her hind leg. If there is no improvement by Thursday we have to take her back in for an MRI. On our way back home I received a message from my good friend his mother n law is not doing good and was put on hospice they did not expect her to make it through the night. We have decided not to make the trip to Sevierville. We were really looking forward to seeing everyone.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Pickles is still not doing good. She is very hesitant about doing her business all she does is just stand there and look at you. You can wait and wait and nothing. She is only urinating once or twice a day. She is not eating like she should and drinks very little water. About an hour ago she looked like she was getting life in her and wanted to go out to take care of business. She started walking and had a pain and screamed and went and froze again. I held off on given her pain medicine earlier today because she was sick last night. But after that incident I ended up giving them to her. We are scheduled to leave here Tuesday so depending on how things are will determine which way we go, continue south or head back north.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

We took Pickles back to the vet this morning. An orthopedic surgeon looked at her and could not feel any damage. After she came back from the exam she seamed to perk up. Patty took out to the yard while I waited for the Dr. and Pickles finally urinated. We got her to eat something with her pills. She is still nervous has has pain and starts to limp every now and then. We did decide to leave and are at Hocking hills in Ohio right now. Dr. Said we needed to give the pills a chance to work and we knew that but going almost 24 hours without urinating started to worry me. She ate some rice and Hamburg when we arrived and took her pills. We will keep her rested the next few days before moving on.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Pickles hurt her leg some how. Yesterday she went running through the house screaming and started to limp. I got her to calm down but every time she started to walk she would take off running and screaming and start to pick up her right hind leg. We took her into emergency clinic and they examined her. Said the pain was coming from her knee area. Uncertain if it was a tendon, ligament or something else. They did not take X-ray. Gave us some pain meds and an anti inflammatory. We could not get her to eat or drink yesterday or even do her business. She just stands outside and stairs at you like what are you trying to do to me. As of this morning I still can’t get her to do her business or eat or drink. I called the clinic and am waiting on a call back. It is approaching 20 hours since she urinated last. We are supposed to leave today to start heading to Sevierville. Now we have to wait in see what is happing with Pickles.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Today we should set a new record for temperature in October as we will probably hit 90 degrees. We are very hot and the north west is being blasted by snow, crazy weather. We will be heading out Friday starting our way to Sevierville. I called Riverside RV park to see if there was a chance to get in early and they said they did not have a spot open in the park at all for the weekend of the 12th and 13th. She said they have been booked up for 2 months. Looks like it will be crowded.
