RE: Considering Travel Nursing

Moderator: What in the heck has happened to RV.NET? It was once a great resource, with answers either directly related to the question, or people stayed with-in their realm of knowledge or subject inquired. I understand if more information is required and asked for. However, these replies are non-related, answering a question with a question or just plain stupid. If one a question reply was not related, we used to PM the individual. I've still received some valid advice, but darn people, respond with a suggestion or input that your familiar with or shut the heck up!! You have a very good point.

RE: Cost to install apparatus for Flat-towing

I went with a Blue Ox base plate and Avail tow bar and Patriot II brake controller, all new and installed by the dealer I bought the MH from, it was $4200 Canadian (roughly $3000 USD) a year and a half ago, and yes I got a good deal on the MH after shopping around for months.

RE: CDC and the government may be loosening the lockdown

No offense but, those kinds of masks to me sound like having a peeing section in a swimming pool. A virus is a virus, coughs and sneezes or not, it spreads. Surgeon General of the United States showing how to make masks These are not meant to filter out virus, but to stop spray from coughs and sneezes. Even N95 masks will not stop virus, that requires a 0.1 micron filter which I defy you to breath thru. As for eyes, wear a face shield or goggles, I have both for wood working. Glasses would probably stop some and saftey glasses more. My point was, in order to stop the spread, not just slow it down, the masks don't stop the spread. Safe distancing is currently the only way to stop this thing, which by human nature will probably not work. IMHO be worried, not complacent and make excuses for doing things you shouldn't.

RE: CDC and the government may be loosening the lockdown

News The states still control this tho but I would expect a lot of states to follow the suggestions. Not the Plague Centers tho. So maybe we will be able to RV again. We are going out to find some cotton material that can be used to make washable masks. They recommend the stuff like tee shirts are made of. 6 or 8 layers. It will not stop viruses but will stop spray from coughs and sneezes. No offense but, those kinds of masks to me sound like having a peeing section in a swimming pool. A virus is a virus, coughs and sneezes or not, it spreads. This thing is GLOBAL, not regionally restricted. Relaxing controls now is the worst thing we can do.

RE: Calgary Stampede Advise

Hi, if you do go up the Icefields parkway to Jasper stop at the Icefields Centre (Huge parking lots for cars and big RV's)and tour the info building, have lunch etc) You can take a ride on a Sno coach and/or a helicopter and go on the Athabasca Glacier and walk on it, or hike, its a ways and steep) If you have time, once in Jasper you can turn right or left on Hwy 16. DW and I know the area well, if you would like suggestions on which way to go (depending on time and interests, message me and I'll send you some info. Enjoy your trip. Icefields Parkway Pete. p.s accsys has great info on their blog! Don't get fuel at Saskatchewan River Crossing, on the Icefields Hwy, very very expensive.

RE: 2nd to Wrangler what are the best toad options?

Our Chev Equinox listed below makes a great toad and very easy to set up. All 2010-2017 V6 can be towed, some pre 2018 4cyl with electric steering have a "death wobble" issue which I understand is easily overcome, but not sure how. 2018's and up depend on the transmission and engine if they're towable or not.

RE: Typical problem we all see in RV parks.

I can't explain the pickup trucks other than maybe trying to warm up the inside first. Those complaining about diesel motorhomes idling before leaving obviously don't have one. Mine has an airbag dump valve that lowers the coach about 6 inches when parked which makes it more stable but also drains most of the air from the tanks. In order to move the vehicle you must build up the air again because the brakes won't release until the air gets to about 70#s therefore you need to let it run to build up the air. I try not to leave too early so as not to upset my neighbors but idling to build air is a must or it won't move. I also can't move my slides while the engine is running so we raise the jacks, build the air so the brakes will release, shutoff the engine, unhook hoses and cords, bring in the slides, then start the engine and move off the spot and away from others to hookup the car. Exactly. Sometimes I'll put mine in high idle mode to build up air pressure quicker, but then it's noisier than normal idle.

RE: Built in vs. Stand-alone GPS?

One question, can you customize new factory built in systems for your rig? IE a fifth wheels weight, height, width and combined tow vehicle and RV length like a Garmin truck and or RV GPS? Back in my day, new 1 ton GM 2011 pickup factory GPS systems were not customizable (if that's a word!)

RE: US 395 Kamer Junction to Hesperia

Pete, things are a little better than before -- some repaving, some additional passing lanes. And if your choice is 395 versus going through metro LA, 395 can be a little faster. Check traffic on Google Maps as you approach the area, in order to choose the least bad route. ;) Having said that, they are starting to build subdivisions again in the Hesperia/Adelanto area -- construction had come to a halt after the real estate crash of 2008, but land values have recovered, and the bulldozers are no longer dozing. ;) So once those houses get built and occupied, there will be additional congestion on 395 in the vicinity of I-15. Thanks.

US 395 Kamer Junction to Hesperia

Hi, has anyone driven this section lately? Last Spring heading northbound the road was rough! Plus a lot of construction. This time we are headed South. Thanks in advance Pete

RE: Hwy 97 BC to California

We just drove 97 from Vernon BC to I-84 in Oregon, road conditions were good, including Blewett pass, but this time of year, the weather changes so fast, I recommend you check wsdot for road conditions first.

RE: Video of why 1/2 tons shouldn’t tow 5th wheels

OK, first off... I'm not a fan of half-tons towing 5er's. Like a political're not going to change my mind on that Next... I don't like this guys videos because he mainly just talks to talk, and you never see his face. Can't trust someone that's afraid to show their face LOL But really... Why do we keep hearing the same old tired statement that 5er's are ALWAYS going to be 20% to 25% pin weight? Maybe that's true for some models, and perhaps it was a good rule of thumb 10-20 years ago. But you see what they're doing with 5er's now...the way they move the axles forward? That's how they're making these things theoretically "half-ton" towable. But for such an "expert", why does this guy choose to make such statements when you can go straight to the manufacturer's website and see that the reported pin weight is 1,443 pounds? Most manufacturers reported pin weight is an empty pin weight. My old (2010) Montana's pin weight was over 1000 lbs heavier loaded than non loaded. Why so much? It had double pane windows, washing machine in the bedroom, 4 door fridge, 4 6v golf cart batteries, king size bed, heavy tool box in storage, propane generator, plus I swear DW hid the kitchen sink in their somewhere along with 500 lbs of "girls stuff", her sewing machine itself gave you ape arms! OK 500 lbs may be slightly over, but you get the point. Yes I was within legal weight limits on my 1 ton truck, but barely.

RE: Canuck with no medical insurance - prepare for emergenncy"?

Fortunately, (or unfortunately, depending upon your point of view) the US is a generous country and won't let you die or suffer in pain on the hospital lawn. You will be billed for the services, and the cost will be astronomical. However there are no debtor prisons or medieval torture chambers to encourage you to pay. So if you are OK with taking advantage of the taxpayers in the country you are visiting you are good to go. It is being irresponsible and selfish, but when has that ever stopped anyone from getting what they want. I agree with you 100% and I'm Canadian. Unless of course, he has the means to pay for any critical care before or after going back to Canada.
