RE: Wanna bring a golf cart and a Jeep towed

Spot on summary . . . which has unfortunately been pretty much ignored. I'm guessing OP has disappeared for good. Don't know why you'd think I've "disappeared for good". I just posted this last night.

Wanna bring a golf cart and a Jeep towed

We're selling our vacation home in SW Fla and plan on using our Challenger for future vacations of a month to 6 weeks. I'm thinking I might want to buy a golf cart to bring along with my Jeep towed. Is there a way to do this? Maybe something to put the golf cart on and then hook up the Jeep.

RE: Jeep towed discharged when towing. This is new.

I'm gonna go with the popular opinion of not using the key in the Jeep on our trek back north next month. My brake buddy will be plugged into the power outlet however, not sure exactly how much power that takes up though.

RE: Jeep towed discharged when towing. This is new.

Just wanted to circle back and give an update. The back of the plug on the Jeep was corroded to the point the charging wire had broken off. Changed out the plug the other day, gotta hook it up to the MH and check to make sure its charging and wired correctly. Pretty sure it is, just wanna make sure before we head back north next month. No fuse I can find though. Thanks again for all the help. Bob

RE: Jeep towed discharged when towing. This is new.

OK. So I checked the voltage on the MH with it running at the 7 pin outlet, read 13.5 or so. Connected the charging cord to the MH, checked the end of the charging cord at the 6 pin connector, same power reading, 13.5 or so. Started the Jeep, tested the battery, read 14.5 or so, connected the cord to the Jeep, no change on the Jeep end. I'm assuming it's a fuse at the Jeep end now. Now Just to find it. I feel I'm on the right path now. Thank you. Bob

If so, then the problem isn't on the motorhome end. If you're using a Roadmaster 6 pin connector, here's how it is wired: http://2manytoyz.com/328TS/jeeptow/roadmaster-connector.jpg width=640 At the connector on the Jeep, check between Pins 2 and 5. You should read about 12.6 Volts. If not, there should be a fuse inside the engine compartment near the battery going to the Roadmaster connector. If both of these are fine, check the wiring on the cable that connects the motorhome to the Jeep. FWIW, I just recently added the charging wiring to our Jeep. The Roadmaster EvenBrake 9400 would drain the Jeep's battery after a few hours. Now after driving 10+ hours, no issues at all. I put the fuse right at the battery, and identified it with a label. Good luck! Robert. Sorry for the confusion. Are you saying at the connector on the front of the Jeep I should be getting power readings with a multimeter? I picked one up today at Walmart, first time ever using one. I messed around with it a bit to get a feel for it. Tested the Jeep battery, with the Jeep off and got readings of 12.6, running 13.8 or so. I then tested the receptacle on the front of the Jeep, with it off and then running. Nothing. I also don't see a fuse anywhere in the engine compartment that's been added on. I haven't checked the MH yet, its in a storage facility a few miles away. Probably Sunday as tomorrow we're gonna get rain from a tropical storm moving up through the Gulf. Thanks, Bob

RE: Jeep towed discharged when towing. This is new.

Thats some great information Robert and Scott G!! Thank you very much. Gonna hit Sanible tomorrow and mess with the MH tomorrow evening. I'll be sure to ask many more questions as I move forward with my diagnosis. I'm a parts changer, can fix almost anything, IF you tell me whats wrong. The diagnosis part, not so much.

RE: S NJ - SW Fla

Used Wildwood RV Village. Exit 329 off of I 75. Nice quick campground. Nice folks running the place. Will stay here next year on our way down. Bonus was it was just 195 miles from our place in Cape Coral. First day- 570 miles, stayed in South of the Border CC. Second day- 535 miles stayed in Wildwood RV Village. Third day- 195 miles to final destination

RE: Jeep towed discharged when towing. This is new.

Well, thank you all for the help and wisdom. We made it to our destination, only 195 miles today on our last leg of our 1300 mile journey. I charged the Jeep all night to 100%. Stopped for gas and it started no problem. I don't think my steering wheel locks, I can move it about as much with the key out as in the acc position with the engine off. The only cigar lighter that I plug the BB in is constant on, so I wouldnt have to turn the key in acc position for that plug to be hot. I'm here in SW Fla for 5 weeks, gonna pick up a volt meter and poke around on the MH and check the Jeep's battery at the local autozone. I checked my records and looks like I put this battery in January of 2018, so not quite 2 years. If it's a fuse any idea on which fuse and on which vehicle? Again thank you. Bob

RE: Jeep towed discharged when towing. This is new.

First thing I would check is the charge wire. It looks fine. Fairly new. Maybe 2 seasons now. No damage. How would I test if it's operating properly? Looks dont mean anything. You need to check it while the coach is running and make sure it's delivering power to the towed. How? Please explain

RE: Jeep towed discharged when towing. This is new.

I have a 1999 Wrangler and I do not turn the key to the ACC. Mine goes one click to unlock the steering wheel. I do know that Jeep changed up things over the years. JimR Owners manual says to turn the key to "ACC" position. Not sure why.

RE: Jeep towed discharged when towing. This is new.

You say you towed this jeep for a few years with no problem, maybe your battery is failing. If a cell is shorted, it will run a your battery down. Most auto parts stores will load test it for no charge.I once had a battery that that would start my coach and I could drive all day until I turned the coach off. After a while the battery would cool down and start the coach again. The charge circuit was heating the plates and causing one to seperate but only while driving. I was thinking that too. When we get to our place in Cape Coral I'll run over to advance auto or similar. This has me stumped though. Of course I have THREE battery chargers at home, one is even a battery re conditioner that will tell me if there's a problem cell, and that's where they are now that I need them, at home. Sheesh

I don’t believe you need the key on. I don’t think the column lock the wheel with the key off. Also do you have a batt. Charge wire running from the MH to the Jeep to keep the batt charged? Most vehicle need to have one to avoid this issue! Yes, we have the charge wire. I should have been more specific.

Jeep towed discharged when towing. This is new.

We've towed this Jeep for a few years now without any problems until this trip. We run the Falcon 2 tow bar and the braek buddy system. I followed the Jeep's owners manual, put the transfer case in Neutral, auto trans in park and switched the ignition key to the "ACC" position. We pulled into the campground yesterday after 570 miles and about 11 hours of driving to find the Jeep completely dead. I had a neighbor ask if I wanted a jump and accepted. Got it started after awhile and let it run about 30 minutes. Shut her down and checked a few times before I hit the rack and when I got up this morning. Started no problem. Figured it was operator error or just one of those things that happen on trips. I double checked everything before I left this morning, stopped after a few hours for a snack and it started right up again. Ok, fixed. Drove for another 400 miles or so, stopped for the night and it's dead. What gives? What do I check and how do I check it? I have a battery charger on her now provided by a nice fella in the campground, and I'm gonna charge it all night but need this fixed for my return trip to NJ next month. Never had this type of problem before. Thanks for any suggestions. Bob

S NJ - SW Fla

Headed down to Cape Coral this Saturday. Our first stop is usually in one of the Carolinas, last few times it's been at the South of the Border Campground. That'll be Saturday night. Looking for a place in Fla around the I 10 or I 75 areas for Sunday night. Would like a nice place closer to or off of I 75. Typically by the time we get to I75 I'm beat and just look for anyplace, usually not so great. Would just like a nice park that would accommodate our 37 foot class "A" dragging our Jeep. Thanks Bob

RE: Diff, transmission maintenance questions

Thanks again all. Looks like I'll have to crawl under a take another look at the diff. I was pretty sure I didn't see a drain plug but looks like I missed it.
