RE: Crecent City via 199 Grant's Pass or 299 Redding

For trailering 199 has some tight spots for big rigs. Going North I always go from Lodi to Petaluma to go North on 101. Going South I would go out 38 to Reedsport and South on 101. A friend from Eureka told me the 38 is the lowest alt route to the coast. We towed a 5th wheel South many times between Christmas and New Years, four times we went to the Coast because on snow on the Siskiyou's. 299 is not recommended for large rigs. I spent a year and a half at Point Arena, Ca one Higway 1 in the USCG and would run to Seattle or Port Angeles a lot back in summer 1967-1969, in a 1967 SS/RS 350 Camaro.

East Valley of Phoenix to Boulder City

I am heading North in a few weeks towing a SxS on a trailer and have taken the 93 to Kingman and on the the Vegas area many times. I do not like the 93 from Kingman to Vegas area. I thought I might try a different route this year. Take the 60 then I-10 to Quartzsite and 95 North to Parker, cross the bridge and pick up the 95 North again at Vidal Junction. Any recent experience with this route. Hilly or mostly flat? I have read about being sure to drive the speed limit in Searchlight. TIA Chris

RE: Ram Cummins/Aisin Failures

A little more on the "Ball Joints" being bad. My truck is a pavement princess with no off roading no different than the guy in the video. Can't get much easier duty than my truck gets or his concerning ball joint wear. Wait a minute here, I know for a fact that you drive on California highways all winter and commute North in the spring and South in the fall on I-5 in Northern California, which are similar to "off road" roads in other states.

RE: Ford 150 lightning recall

Want to see a lot of EV on the road, come to the Phoenix area. Tesla's everywhere. I would note that we snowbirds come each fall to try and slow traffic down, and each year we fail. Speed limits have been complete thrown out now. I do not know why they even maintain the speed limit signs. I still think that built in batteries in EVs was a mistake, they should have been swappable. Pull into a swap station and the robot swaps the battery for a fully charged one and bills you for the amp hrs used and sends you on your way in a couple minutes. I fly electric model airplanes and race 1/10 scale RC trucks. Both hobbies are based on swappable batteries.

RE: Some worry about payload……

We don't need no stinkin solid frames. :B Or tailgates that will open if the frame is twisted a bit on uneven ground.

RE: RAM 3500 with HO 6.7L Cummins SRW

My F-150 has a 10 speed and it spends a lot of time shifting gears, sometimes skipping a gear. I am sure that 7 or 8 would have been just fine behind the 2.7L ecoboost that has a broad torque curve down low. It is said that it is snappier and more fun to drive than the 3.5L ecoboost.

RE: RAM 3500 with HO 6.7L Cummins SRW

If I kept my 2015 3500 4x4 HO SBW SB Laramie at 70 MPH it would break the 20 mpg barrier easily. Towing at 24,500 lbs combined with tall 5th wheel netted 10.5-11 mpg. Did I ever say, "I loved my 3.42 gears"? 80 MPH at 1750 rpms. I still think they got rid of the 3.42's as a concession to the 68 RFE's taller 1st and 2nd gears.

RE: New HD truck bed rails too tall for 5th wheel

Just go to your nearest dealer and measure the bed rail height. Measure the front overhang on the 5er. Done. Not really! What about the amount the rear compresses with his load??? Like I said he won't know if the RV needs any adjusting until his RV is FULLY LOADED and hitched. ^^^^ What Ron said! ^^^^

RE: Ram Reduces Max Tow Ratings

This could be an issue for some who feel it necessary to stay within the manufacturers maximum tow ratings. For others of us it really doesn’t make an iota bit of difference what the manufacturer’s tow rating is…. If we feel comfortable towing 5,000 lbs over the tow limit we’re probably going to tow 5,000 lbs over the manufacturer’s tow limit …. putting a different sticker on the door pillar isn’t going to change the way the truck behaves. Except for BC, which somehow enforces weight limits that other areas do not concern themselves with. In my home state of Washington one can purchase tonnage that exceeds that stickers in the door jam. No one with a pickup is going to exceed the Federal Bridge Weight laws that are enforced at weigh stations. Hot shot haulers tend to laugh at the internet weight police.

RE: Ford's issues

Its the dealerships that really cast a shadow on manufacturers. Charging huge markups just because they could and when was the last time you bought a car at a dealership. It takes hours. Sure ford has had its share of issues, but so does everyone else. Bought a 2020 Ford Edge ST in June of 2020 and traded it in September 2021 for a 2021 F-150. They gave me more than I paid for the Edge and 2K off MSRP on the F-150. Of course in both transactions I took my daughter-in-laws father with me. He use to manage the dealership! The Edge ST was a service loaner with 1500 miles on it and 9K off MSRP and full warranty.

RE: Alarming spalling failures on 7.3 Godzilla

Looks like the same thing they had going on in there V10's. we had them at work and went through engins like crazy in the f550's we had. later we found out because they were never shut off and spent a good 15 hours a day idleing every day they wern't getting enough oil at idle and killing cams. in the video he has a cube van which if it is a delivery truck will spend large amounts of time idleing ... who knows.. New Hemi engines have the same issue!

RE: Ram Reduces Max Tow Ratings

The point was Ram hasn’t just randomly revised and lowered their tow ratings, regardless of whether those yootoob ding dongs think they have or not. But it is good for clicks! They did succeed at that. LOL... So you're saying Ram's towing guide website tow ratings reduction is a figment of our imagination? If so maybe Ram ran out of that fairy tail pixie dust for their tow ratings and had to pay the piper! :B Explain the 2021 model in the pictures in their video???? What I posted was right off RAM build site yesterday!

RE: Ram Reduces Max Tow Ratings

Maybe they decided the 2500 suspension shouldn't have that high of a tow rating. Note: Why do both of the images in the video say 2021??? 2023 3500 Same tranny and a higher rating. https://i.imgur.com/lRJRqo6l.jpg 2023 3500 Get the HO/Aisin and~ https://i.imgur.com/Ei9dgNKl.jpg 2023 2500 So here is a 2500 from the same online tool. https://i.imgur.com/QzSITUFl.jpg

RE: Diesel to Gas Power Observation

I watched for 5 minutes, but couldn’t bring myself to waste an entire 20 minutes on this. I’m never one to give much credence to anecdotal statements about what is selling or what isn’t. As I am generally interested, I’d love to see real sales numbers of what the breakdown is of diesel vs gas in HD trucks (as well as 2500 vs 3500 sales). I know you used to be able to find that, but I haven’t seen it in a while. The truck that they bought is a pretty truck. But I really can’t see buying a DRW with a gasser. I hope they are happy with their purchase. I wouldn’t be. I see a lot of Ram 4500/5500 Ram Hemi powered trucks. Just seen a fairly new Ram 4500 flat bed with a welder on the back with a Hemi badge on the fender just a few minutes ago. A few years ago Ram HD's were essentially all Cummins powered, but I've seen this trend towards gas for a few years now. Which leads to the next question. Since there rumors that the Hemi is going out to the pasture what gas engine will Ram utilize? Gas powered Cummins that soon will be released? Cummins is developing a 6.7 gas engine and Ford designed and released a big block 7.3 for a reason. Wish them good luck with their cams in those Hemi's in service trucks if they leave them idling for hours at a time. No gasser goes down a step mountain with a heavy load like a diesel with an exhaust brake.

RE: Armada to Pull 33' Lightweight TT

A 31'-33' TT on a mid size suv with P tires may not make for a fun towing experience. Thats a long tall wall for side winds and passing semis to push on. Now if the suv was on a '08 3/4 ton chassis 6.x engine and 3.73-4.10 gears with LT E tires with 5xxx fawr and 6xxx rawr then it would be a great handling combo in the wind on on the interstate around semi trucks. AKA as a rare 2500 Chevy Suburban! One has to go back to 2001-2006 models however to get the 8.1L with Allison transmission, with is a towing beast and likes gas.

RE: Armada to Pull 33' Lightweight TT

I have towed a 29' 5th wheel with a 2001 RAM 2500 from Phoenix to Palm Springs with 40 MPH wind out of the South towing the 5th wheel trailer. That rig you are talking about would be parked or blown into the desert in pieces. Time to think seriously about the other 5 souls in the tow vehicle. Not sure I would want to tow a 33' TT with my 2021 F-150 that is rated to tow 6600 pounds. I towed a 39' 5th wheel from Arizona to San Diego with a 2015 RAM 3500 SRW and the wind in the canyon leaving Az and into Ca on I-8 was brutal. I have towed though Nv in heavy winds all day. I have seen several crashed TT over the years, all towed by SUVs with shorter wheel base as noted above.

RE: Broken Frame on a RAM 3500

I found out that it's a short bed truck with a camper for a long bed. Radically changing the dynamics. Then compound that with the extended hitch and motorbike. Wow what a risk! The only short bed dually RAM is the Mega cab and this a crew cab.

RE: Not bad for 11 years and 240,000 miles.

Most people enjoy living with blinders on. My RV has a factory scale weight of 18,075# plus 400# for gen. Would anyone actually think it now weighs 24k? It sure does and only way I know that is from actually weighing the RV. Lucy has all those rocks that go back and forth on the West Coast!

RE: Not bad for 11 years and 240,000 miles.

Chris, how much did the Camper weigh ready for the weekend? Can't remember. The Chevy was bagged, the RAM was not. Over 3K for sure, most likely close to 3500-4000. From an older post here by someone: "Lance 900 which is 11' 3" long ad weighs a little over 4,000 lbs loaded and with 50 gallons of water." Pic shows how the 1st and 2nd gen SRW RAM's can really handle a load. However the 16.5 tire/rims on the 93 were a little bouncy!
