RE: JL Wrangler brakeaway cable

A mechanical Readybrake cable is no use with the electrical RVi brake unit. I always follow the main wiring harness to the firewall and usually am able to pierce the edge of the large rubber boot around that. Have no specific experience with the JL turbo, sorry.

RE: Towing with Superchips tuner ?

I’m not impressed with Superchips canned tunes. I tried them and after the novelty wore off, it was obviously not kind to the transmission and driveline. I went back to stock. I have also used 5-star on a 6.8 under severe service. No issues, and I’d trust their work.

RE: Best *mid priced* Kinetic Recovery Rope?

There’s a lot of opinions offered from people with no experience in off road recovery. There’s a time for methods with little stretch, and then there’s a time and place for snatching. Which is not hard on equipment at all when done properly. I get my kinetic ropes at the marine hardware store. Nylon rope in the appropriate diameter works well without the boutique price.

RE: Vehicle Weights - Class A with Dinghy

What you’ll find is the budget DP will have the Allison 2000 series transmission, which is a key limitation in that the max GCWR is somewhere in the low 30k lb range. It has torque limitations, so it’s usually mated to a 340/700 Cummins. These coaches may have a 10k hitch because it’s a standard component- but no room between the coach weight and the transmission limit to tow more than a few thousand pounds. A step up is the Allison 3000, with much higher ratings. In smaller coaches it’s with the 360/800 engine, and the same transmission is used for progressively larger engines as coach weight expands. Our 34’ Newmar has GVWR 33k and GCWR 43k. Bottom line get a 3000 Allison for heavy toads.

RE: WIX oil filter for Onan genny?

Unfortunately the meaningful information- x% of y size particles- is not offered up by manufacturers very often. Cutting up filters and chatting about one’s impressions is a popular pastime these days, but not a substitute for real data. I trend toward buying the better filters with synthetic media, out of the hope that the filtration is somewhat improved, but hope is all I have. I agree that given no hard facts on filter efficacy, reduced oil change intervals is about all we can control.

RE: VW Traton has made a bid for Navistar

Maybe on the bottom of the world, subsidiaries don’t take direction from their parent corporations. But here on the topside, they **** well do. Anyone believes otherwise, I have a bridge to sell you.  VW COrporation is a finance and strategy hub, does nor deal with the workings of the overall company You ever hear the phrase “follow the money”? :S What do you think “Strategy” means? VW calls the tune, and the band will play as directed. Your title states VW and you want to argue VW group has no voice in this. :C

RE: VW Traton has made a bid for Navistar

Interesting. I don’t know that will be welcome news considering Volkswagen’s reputation for unreliability in the US. Of course Diamler is no better, yet Freightliner has taken the lion’s share of the market, so what do I know? Price sells more than any other consideration I suppose.

RE: RV gasoline life span in long term storage

Sorry to hear about your difficulties. Was any fuel stabilizer used prior to parking? If so, it’s probably OK, but I wouldn’t personally go past two years even with stabilizer. If it was not treated, it depends on the conditions, temperature, humidity, how full the tank is. Over a year could be to the point of degrading already. If it was mine, I’d put some Techron fuel system cleaner and some octane boost in the tank and hope for the best. Probably that will get you through that gas and you can drive it out and get fresh gas. It’s impossible to be certain of the situation until you get into it. Could be no problems; could need fuel filters, worst case it could need the tank dropped and drained.

RE: Please advise - determining max tow capacity

We had a 2014 F53 coach and at that time Fords ratings were 22k / 26k. Towed a 6k F150 crew cab all over North America. No issues whatsoever. I always weigh my rigs and that combo was right at 26k with a full load of water and fuel. Do some searching and you’ll find Ford chassis manuals online for the previous years of F53.

RE: Credit Card apps

I've heard, but "it ain't necessarily so". And so far the digital license isn't accepted in many states. I carry all the stuff I need in a wallet not much thicker than my phone. It's been like that for 40 years, I hate a thick wallet, and have never found the need to haul all that stuff around. First you ask how to carry all that stuff; then you say you never do. :B

RE: Credit Card apps

Another step to not carrying any wallet. I look forward to it.How would you carry your Medicare ID card? Driver's license? Cash for tips? Library card? I guess you haven’t heard, there’s an app for that. I have all those cards in my phone. If I carried all those bits of plastic and cardboard around my wallet would be 3” thick.

RE: 6.7 cummins HP

I’m not a fan of that rating because it’s paired to the 2xxx series Allison. And the transmission is the reason for the rating. It’s maxed out and can’t even handle the peak HP or torque from the 6.7. And it’s reduced even lower in top gears and low gears. Something with the 360 hp rated engine will have the 3000 series tranny and deliver full power in every gear.

RE: Clean Diesel trucks for TC ... maybe not!

Lots of people with no experience fear new diesels. After having had older and current there is nothing to be afraid of. Yes, there were some bad results in the transition years, not today. And power robbing? I think not. More power and better economy than ever before.

RE: Sandblasting and powdercoating: Les Schwab or dedicated shop

I’d just buy new wheels. Removing rust properly is not cheap, neither is powder done properly. Doing a half baked job will just hide the rust. Temporarily.

RE: Newbie ClassA questions - Stacker trailers

We have a Newmar 35’ with a 10k tow rating, and the GVWR and GCWR to support it. I expect a stacker with a vehicle and toys will be well over 10k unless you choose the contents carefully. I’d start with getting an accurate estimate of your anticipated trailer weight. I expect the math will lead you to a big tag axle coach, or a super C. There’s plenty of supers with 20k or more tow rating.

RE: '83 Toyota pickup start trouble in cold, wet weather

I’d still think spark problem, ether is easier to ignite than gasoline. Try a heat source like a trouble light with an incandescent bulb and leave it near the coil or distributor during wet spells. That will drive off any condensation. A heat gun if you have one or a small space heater could be used also. When you locate the part that when warm and dry cures the no start then you’ll know what to replace.
