RE: Elon's Starlink Internet Service

My name is Bill. When someone calls me “Billy” it generally a demeaning term to belittle me. That’s what I see in your posts. Fight fare without the demeaning insults. He knows this well. He's just an A$$. He takes pride in it and rolls in the mud just as happy as a pig in shinola. If no one quotes him I won't have to see any more of his drivel. LOL. Again. Name calling? Hello Pot, meet Mr Kettle. The only reason Billy and i go at it is that he attacked me on these boards some time back for no reason. I actually thought he was posting while drunk or confusing me with someone (tho i have no knowledge of his drinking habits). If you cant take it, dont dish it out and certainly dont go crying to mommy. I treat people like they have treated me- works both ways. Heres some more info pertinent to the thread for those that want to learn instead of complain. Always read the comments at this site as they usually have pretty good input on the subject. https://spacenews.com/news-analysis-spacex-has-a-lot-riding-on-starlinks-499-ufo-on-a-stick/ edited to add: also pls note that i offered to buy Bill and his partner lunch because i thought he was near me at the time. Turned me down flat saying it would never happen. Some people just want to hang onto the hate, i guess.

Billy, why wont you meet me for lunch if we are close? I'll buy. Bring your partner if you want. Depending on where you are exactly, i probably know the good spots too. I really think ftf helps folks understand each other better. Typing words can never convey the true subtlety/nuances that speech can. Again, i am completely happy for anyone who likes their current dish, landline, or even bright plaid yellow bell bottoms (well, that last one is a white lie, those things are hideously offensive to my eyes). This is America and Capitalism and the Freedom to Choose! But looking at what Elon has done in such a short period of time(!), what the projected timeline is.....well, i just dont see how the old services can have any future. RIP old guard, you were fun while you lasted. Refusal to see whats coming will get you run over. If i can help you, or anyone, function better and enjoy life more (and save money!!!), then the world is just a little bit better place. RE: banking when full timing

Well, we were! Once we finished up our coach purchase we left for TX to get it registered and pay the man all the money we had left in taxes! Oh well. Opportunity Lost.

RE: banking when full timing

We have been BOA customers for many, many years, even before we started full-timing. We have been full timing (truly moving and living) since 2000 and BOA has only failed us a few times. There are a couple of pockets around the US where a BOA or BOA ATM does not exist. No matter, though. Need cash in a banking desert? Stop by Wal-Mart, make a purchase and get whatever you need as cash back using your debit card. Need to deposit a check and no bank or ATM is available? Use the BOA app to take a picture of the check and it's in your account in a matter of seconds. I needed a certified check to buy our new (to us) Prevost a couple of weeks ago and there were only 2 BOA's in the Knoxville, TN area. We were about 30 minutes away, drove "to town", got the check and delivered it to the dealer. Done and done! We transfer funds from investment to banking and banking to investment with the click of a button. Bills are paid using our BOA CC automatically and we pay the CC off monthly. We also get a cash back reward with the card in the $50-$80/month range having done nothing more than pay our bills! Love BOA! BILL! Youre near Knoxville right now? I'm close (enough). Lets get together and have lunch.

RE: Honest RV Dealers - Are there any?

Shorten the list, stay away from Camping World and right there you're ahead of the game. Agree. The worst experience we ever had even looking at RVs was at a CW. But yes, there are dealers out there that care about the Next Sale. Because they know that our 1st RV almost certainly isnt going to be our Last RV.

RE: Elon's Starlink Internet Service

edatlanta, i think you nailed it. hilarious! Billy, i was TRYING to teach something by stating what i had read about the weather conditions that Starlink excels in (btw, it was all of them in case you missed it). Not everything is about your posts. And as to my words, i have watched you do worse to other folks in the preceding months. I try to talk to people in a manner similar to how they speak. If you want to sarcasm at me, Git After It! I can laugh at myself with the best of em. Some of your stuff does actually get a good grin from me, bion. I still cant believe this is something that anyone believes (I'm not really sure you arent trolling us on this. Seriously, i think youre smarter than that). From Wall St analysts to tech wizards to everyone who hates the way that the cable and phone companies (o yeah, Starlink's voip is gonna reek havoc there too) to people....well, dang near Everyone is chomping at the bit for Starlink to go nationwide. Can Unreliable dish companies with exclusion zones (both regional and under trees)compete with cheaper (or even close) with completly reliable and GAWDAWFULFASTER internet? I understand that some very few will still cling to the old ways of doing things. Heck i have a childhood friend who only has a landline and doesnt want the internet. I've offered to fix him up and cover all costs but he just cant handle the change. I KNOW he would like it. He was one of the smartest people in our large HS and he loves playing on the computer i gave him but he is someone who just cant handle change anymore. And let me say again. If you want your Dish, you can keep it. If it works for you, I am happy for you. Really. But the rest of us are going to be taking the rocketship speeds down the Inturweb Turnpike! Heres the first 2 results of a DDG search if youd like to read up on the future: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File$Starlink_satellites_in_orbit_since_May_2019_(target_%3D_1440).svg ((edited to say place a colon in place of the $ in the above link. the software here sees it as an emoticon )) https://www.whistleout.com/Internet/Guides/starlink-satellite-internet-vs-viasat-hughesnet (Elon has said No Caps)

RE: Elon's Starlink Internet Service

The most recent info from the beta testers for the Starlink service. Hardware costs to be a beta tester $499. Monthly service $99/month. No information thus far on end user experience or expectations for the service. Lots of speculation and hopes but few actual experiences. It's also still unknown how many users are using the few satellites currently in orbit (yes, I call less than 100 few) and how additional users or satellites will effect the experience and the cost. I have great hopes for Starlink. I just don't have any hopes that this will be anything usable by us common folks in the next few years. Point of interest, however, is that if the service was $99/month and you still had to pay for a streaming service to watch TV you would still be better off with DISH or DirecTV plus a stand alone internet service. You've missed a few reports or arent reading the right sites. Reports I've seen are that even when covered with icicles and snow and in blizzard conditions, Better Than Nothing Beta (Starlink's words, not mine!)works without a hiccup. Rave reviews all around. The only downside so far is that the beta units are intentionally geofenced, meaning that they are only allowed to work in the beta/home area. Traditional Satellite is dying. Maybe not in 2020, but very very soon. At 60 new laser sats per Falcon9 launch, you'll have a front row seat in 2021 to watch the expansion of Starlink. And my God, i dont even know how many Starlink sats Elon will be able to stuff into a Starship when he gets those things flying! (you might want to recount those currently orbital sats, eh). btw, if you havent been following Starlinks plans, those laser comms between sats all but eliminates the need for all those ground stations someone may have said were necessary. Pricing? lol. You do know this is a BETA, right? Look up Economic Scaling. It amazes me that the beta is this cheap! FWC understands. Capitalism Rules. Elon will prob price it far enough under to dominate the market, yet make lots of profit. The future is coming but you can still hang on to your landline and tube tv if you want.

RE: Do we have to winterize if we use our RV during the winter?

This is to notify new RV campers that pink RV antifreeze will freeze hard in winter time hard freezes. For instance like others I poured generous amount of antifreeze in my toilet bowel to stop the flush valve from drying out and the antifreeze froze solid one winter while RV was in storage in Reno, Nevada and yes the antifreeze is a 50/50 water mix. Just saying Did you have appreciable damage?

RE: Thor or Forest River - Warranty and reputation

Best you can do with either is a complete inspection...inside, outside, under, roof...and run every system for a couple of hours at least before any money changes hands. Glad you left the used Chaparral in the rear view mirror. Thanks, not paying 54k for a 40k 5th wheel! Thanks to everyone for the replies, but maybe I wasn't clear, sorry. I'm not asking about individual issues, this brand had this issue that brand had that issue... I'm asking if there is a difference bettween the brands when you *do* have an issue. Which is better for warranty/customer service, etc. Or is this more the dealer and/or extra warranty? Thanks! If i understand your question correctly, I'd say that there is no appreciable difference between the 2 on quality. I dont have any experience with either on warranty, but I'd bet they are similar there too. Just inspect the heck out of whatever you intend to purchase- but that goes for any rv imo.

RE: Motorhome vs travel trailer for cross country with pets??

Thank you everyone!! I knew I was lost but now I’m realizing how much I really don’t know about this... it had never occurred to me that campgrounds would have age limits for rvs or pet limits... your advice has been really helpful..... Dont get too concerned about the 10 year rule some CGs have (i have seen several that have that in their rules). It has been discussed here a lot and the concensus is that it is a rule that is in place to exclude junky old trailers(and people) and is rarely applied. If your RV is in good shape and looks good, no one is going to bother you.

RE: Motorhome vs travel trailer for cross country with pets??

I forget the name of the group but there is a female only RV club (or few?) out there. you may want to look into them re the safety aspect. I also like the large van and rent a MH iideas previously expressed for the trip. But if you have a truck with a large enough cab, you can pull a trailer and let the pets ride in the truck, perhaps in their own crates.

RE: Going full time with dogs

Agreed, 3 yappy dogs will not make you popular and could get you kicked out of many campgrounds. Everyone that knows me knows i love dogs as much as life, but +another on vahalla360's post.

RE: Opinion on a campground?

Nasty reviews at Campground Reviews wont necessarily work as there is some editing of the facts by that site going on. I had about 10 reviews there (all positive) before i had a bad experience at Ocean Lakes CG in Myrtle Beach SC. Basically a bunch of drunks were breaking multiple CG rules and i asked Ocean Lakes CG to calm them down. Office person said sure and then did nothing. Asked again, different front office person, and was shined on yet again. Another call or 2 (this has been about 10 years ago) and they couldnt keep their lies straight that they were telling me. Since they were also breaking SC/county laws that the local popo get quite serious about, i just called the county police. Problem Solved and i dont think anyone went to jail, tho it appeared that some tickets were issued. I posted all this at CG Reviews. The review was promptly deleted and i received an email saying that CG Reviews didnt believe me. I invited them to check the Horry County police reports. No idea why i wasnt believed as the review was completely factual and not written in an antagonizing manner. I just wrote it off as Sponserhip money being involved and resolved to not completely trust any rating on the CG Reviews site. The Happy Ending was that we moved the next morning (OL gave us Zero crapp and immediately issued a proper refund) to a nearby CG that has become our fav beach CG of anywhere.

RE: banking when full timing

The reason I created an account at BOA in the first place was that they have more ATMs in the areas that we travel than anyone else. But i use my local Credit Union to epay all the bills and use the BOA as a backup account if i run into a problem (which hasnt occurred). Talk with your local bank- tell them what you want to do and get their insight. I bet theyll be very helpful. You can make most anything work as long as you can connect to the internet imo.

RE: Do we have to winterize if we use our RV during the winter?

Also remember that most forecast temps are for 'the airport' or a central to everybody spot. Microclimates exist everywhere.

RE: Do we have to winterize if we use our RV during the winter?

While there are certainly ways around it, I'd advise winterizing everything at risk- multiple times if called for. It's just not that much effort and if you are wrong, the expense/aggravation can be huge. Perhaps adding some thermometers to check 1st thing each morning could give you a better idea how cold those critical spots are actually getting overnight.

RE: Thoughts on the Cost of RVing

I traveled at 4 and 5 dollars a gallon for gasoline. Under 2 sure isnt going to crimp my style now even if my income hadnt risen. But i understand the concern expressed about government raising fuel taxes any time they think they can get away with it.

RE: Any one else giving up snow birding due to the covid

Masks dont help you, they retain your water vapor droplets and thereby protect others (assuming that you are sick and shedding). They also contribute to more pneumonia infections (in the users), which the US is currently seeing an uptick in. If you choose to wear a mask, Wash It Regularly or dispose of it regularly if it cant be effectively washed. And throwing it out the car window is not proper disposal even tho it seems to be the favorite choice of my local morons.
