RE: Times Up, Told You So, DirecTV is Dead

I should have been more clear. The distance to an Earth based transmitter is actually 500 miles (250 miles up and 250 miles down) and then you hit an Earth station. A) I never said it won't work B) The speed of light is what it is. C) NEVER have I implied that data transmission is instantaneous, it is controlled by the speed of light. The speed from my cell to the tower or the speed from my phone to the satellite and back to Earth. I have been working with satellite internet for years and the improvement in latency to a satellite 250 miles above the Earth compared to the latency from a Geo-synchronous satellite located 22,500 miles above the Earth will be AWESOME. Would I give up by fiber internet for any kind of satellite based internet? Of course not...and neither would you!

RE: Directv ???? Just seeking answers??? Confused!!

The only news is that ATT/DTV has announced the sunset of ALL SD programming. The problem is that they keep moving the date and they may or may not ever end the service. Just be aware that if they do, despite having an HD receiver, you will only receive the limited number of channels that will be broadcast from the 101 satellite and you will never be able to receive anything from 99 and 103. This was supposed to happen about a year ago and then they moved the date to August 2020 but as of today, nothing has changed.

RE: Times Up, Told You So, DirecTV is Dead

Thanks for keeping your post kind and civil. I know all the facts and the facts include not being able to change the speed of light. A signal to a tower a mile away and a tower 250 miles away WILL increase latency no matter what. I like how you imply I think I am smarter than Elon but belittling me offers no real benefits here.

RE: Times Up, Told You So, DirecTV is Dead

You do know that a phased array antenna must move to work properly, right? I'm not suggesting it won't work or it won't work despite moving on a continuous basis but it will be very interesting to see how latency at 250 miles vs. a few miles (tower to cell) will affect the overall experience. I know it's coming and I know it will work but I still have questions about costs to remain profitable and speed comparisons with satellite and 5G (which Starlink is likely not). There continues to be a ground station issue and the number of ground stations required. If Elon can figure out the laser communication between satellites (not kidding here) the number of ground stations might be reduced but the latency will increase slightly.

RE: Engine swap.

I hope this is just a spammer testing the board as there is no possible conversion at this time.

RE: Times Up, Told You So, DirecTV is Dead

The dish is self aligning and about the size of a large pizza box. The installation instructions are: "Aim it at the sky. Plug it in. In either order." Now that's funny! So the only users are going to be mobile users? Why would any fixed location need an auto seeking antenna? Is the antenna going to have to track the satellites moving across the sky? If so, the antenna is going to be constantly moving? This gets more interesting everyday!

RE: Lithium Batteries

When the cost of Li is 10X the cost of AGM, cost will likely be the final determination.

RE: Times Up, Told You So, DirecTV is Dead

Put all the satellites in the sky you like. Without the ground stations, infrastructure, personnel and compatible equipment (equipment costs, antenna size?) you still have a long hill to climb.

RE: Times Up, Told You So, DirecTV is Dead

Elon's internet is inevitable so there is no need for me to want it or not. However, it's not the magic bullet that will suddenly fix all the issues with Internet service Worldwide (or even Country wide).

RE: Dish Update

Satellite TV is STILL THE BOMB if you are a full time RVer. We have been living in our RV since 1997, traveling full time since 2000 and have no S&B backup plan. If we are home the TV is on and we are both on our computers, checking our phones, playing games and just doing what everyone does in a house. Not ready to give up satellite TV and even timmac agrees that for many RVers, satellite TV is still the very best option. Satellite TV is not going anywhere. I do expect one service to buy the other with DISH buying DTV as the best option. The problem is the incompatibility of the 2 systems and the costs required to either keep 9 satellites in orbit or change all the DISH customers antennas to the more favorable DTV satellites. Keep in mind that timmac is a very part time RVer and when he does travel he has an unlimited BUSINESS internet plan so his view of the real world for the rest of us is highly jaded.

RE: Times Up, Told You So, DirecTV is Dead

Let me know if you need a reality check! Billions of dollars in satellites and on-going infrastructure costs all being sold to only those who don't already have good service (maybe 20%, max). Pie in the sky is one thing and I don't need any help with that math!

RE: Times Up, Told You So, DirecTV is Dead

Beta testing will begin in Canada and the Northern US only. Still years away from full US / World coverage. Lots of ground stations still need to be built as well. You have to ask who the customer will be. Much of the US has good fiber (or similar) coverage. Satellite internet will not be better. So the market is only the under served in the US and other Nations.

RE: WHAT dinghy or toad is good to tow ???

We tow a Jeep Cherokee Tralhawk. Takes five minutes to hookup and unhook. Just a button to push pretty much. It also is a very comfortable drive yet offers us the ability to do a lot of four-wheeling in the mountains. Easy to tow. X2 but it doesn't have to be a Trailhawk. The Cherokke and Grand Cherokee are real luxury rides and with the right transmission they change from being a car to being a trailer in less than 30 seconds. The other 4 1/2 minutes is just connecting the tow bar, lights and brake.

RE: Standard definition from direct tv

The only folks who would miss SD (all broadcasts from the 101 satellites) would be RVers and truckers using dome systems. Every other DTV customer would have no idea that SD disappeared.

RE: WHAT dinghy or toad is good to tow ???

Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee 4WD. Factory setup for towing, just be sure you get the correct transmission with neutral switch button.

RE: Winegard Traveller T4 or DISH Wally Problem?

You mention Trav'ler (open face full size antenna) and T4 (dome style antenna) in the topic header. Which type antenna do you actually have?

Check out . They will be able to set you up with the necessary hardware and you will be able to use all of the existing wiring. Great company to work with.

RE: Splendide 7100xc Module Board?

Call Westland Sales (503) 722-9202 they are the factory sales and service for Splendide. Great people and they will assist you in troubleshooting your unit. They also will sell you the parts you need, Not a fan of the non vented model but if you elect to repair it these are the people to talk to. X2!.....However, if it's a non-vent combo, it's pretty much worthless as mentioned above. I doubt you will ever be happy. The vented units are great!
