RE: F-250 vs F-350 srw

Don't pay any attention to my signature, I have not changed it. Just throwing this out there and I know some will want to beat me up so fire away. I do not want a dual wheel pickup for a daily driver and I do not want an extra vehicle. Here is my setup and my weights. F-250 diesel, short bed crew cab, 7,500# air bags. Jayco Pinnacle with MORride pin box. I looked at the F-350 srw and the axle ratings are the same, 5200# front and 6340# rear. Springs are the only difference, hence the airbags. 20 inch Michelin tires rated at 3750# each for a total of 7500# per axle.
Loaded to travel the scale ticket says, front axle 4,640#, rear axle 6,900#. So I am ok on everything except rear axle and it is 560# over the rating. I have been running this setup for 2 years. It drives and rides like a dream, no bouncing, no bucking, no chunking and it stops almost as quick as the truck by itself. It will go faster uphill than I want to go. We went all over Colorado last year (including the million dollar highway) and not once did it feel unsafe. I guess time will tell what the 560# over on the rear axle will do.
The F250 diesel with the Trailer Tow High Capacity is the same truck as the SRW F350 diesel with almost identical price tags as well .... the F350 is $335 more than the F250. What was your reason for choosing the 250 over the 350? Has yours got the High Capacity Trailer Tow package?

RE: I Bought Too Much Truck

If you focus on the parking limitations you’ll be convinced you would have been happier with a short box. The long box has a bigger fuel tank and is less likely to have the back cab corner get crunched from hitting the fiver nose. I chose maneuverability over the bigger fuel tank and so I’ve been buying short box trucks for the last 20 years. Your might as well focus on the advantages of the long box and be happy ….. or sell it and buy a short box.

RE: The Ford Explorer Men only Edition

Cute. I get it . . . in recognition of Women's History Month. OK.
So, when is Men's History Month, or did I miss it?
The world's population is almost an equal split, 50.4% men, 49.6% women.
So, we should expect equal billing, right?Basically, every month is Men's History Month. Or hadn't you noticed? :)
Sometimes my wife wishes I was history . . . . does that count? :E
Unless people start using a tiny bit of common sense and start standing against the insanity that is going on in the world, men and woman are both history.

RE: MPH vs MPG

I think if I was travelling with you I'd be too cheap to keep up, and I'd still be stopping more often than you for fuel on account of the pop can sized fuel tank on the short box.

RE: RAM 3500 with HO 6.7L Cummins SRW

^^^ I think it’s got to be a 3500 series with the Aisin …. the high output is only available in a 3500 series and is only available with the Aisin.

RE: RAM 3500 with HO 6.7L Cummins SRW

Just discovered that the new RAM we ordered has been built and is waiting to ship. The 2015 RAM 2500 with the regular 6.7L Cummins that we have now will get around 20-21 miles per gallon when running empty on a trip. Does anyone have experience with the HO on fuel mileage? Both trucks have the 3.73 rear end.
Thanks
Pretty sure your 2015 SRW has the 3.42 rear end ,unless you put 3.73's in it . As far as mileage no idea , but would stand to reason having 3.73 in the new one ,probably slightly less mileage would be my guess .
The High Output also has a lower compression ratio which is also likely to contribute to poorer fuel economy when empty. On the other hand, I would guess that neither the gear ratio nor the lower compression ratio will have much affect on the truck's towing mileage.

RE: Ram Reduces Max Tow Ratings

^^^ I think the BC law pertaining to pickup trucks pulling rvs is: If a police officer sees that a pickup is obviously overloaded he can have the overloaded truck weighed and ticketed based on the GVWR of the truck. But, I’d be very surprised if a BC cop would ever ticket a new 2500 series diesel pickup, leveled with air bags, towing an 18000 lb fiver.

RE: Ram Reduces Max Tow Ratings

This could be an issue for some who feel it necessary to stay within the manufacturers maximum tow ratings. For others of us it really doesn’t make an iota bit of difference what the manufacturer’s tow rating is…. If we feel comfortable towing 5,000 lbs over the tow limit we’re probably going to tow 5,000 lbs over the manufacturer’s tow limit …. putting a different sticker on the door pillar isn’t going to change the way the truck behaves.

RE: New 1500 series pickups and Hensley Arrow

^^^ It’s an honest question. I found a super deal on a new Hensley but if it’s just totally unnecessary for her application, than even at a deal it might be a waste of money. They have a cheap weight distribution hitch that is supposed to provide some sway control that they used on their previous trailer. My BIL figures that’s all she needs.

New 1500 series pickups and Hensley Arrow

I’ve never towed with a half ton nor have I towed a tag axle RV. My sister has a newer GMC Denali 1500 with the baby Duramax and tow package. The truck is rated to tow up to 13000 lbs. She has no experience towing. The trailer they are planning on buying is a 24 foot tandem axle tag trailer with a GVWR of about 6000 lbs. Is buying a Hensley Arrow hitch for such a small trailer of much value or is the GM anti sway control along with a typical weight distribution hitch more than adequate to provide a safe and pleasant towing experience?

RE: MPH vs MPG

18 Ford F350 diesel DRW 4:30 gear, 9 towing 66-70. 14 no trailer 72-75. If you are worried about fuel mileage, you need a different hobby.
The more fuel I use the more I’m going to be concerned about fuel mileage. Not much point in a cyclist being overly concerned about his gas mileage.

RE: 2024 GMC and 2023 Super Duty

Hard to believe that trucks have doubled in price since I bought my 2014 .
Trucks have not doubled since 2014, or even 2004 for that matter.
LOL. Have you shopped trucks lately? Prices may have not doubled since 2014 (not far off, but they have more than doubled since 2004.
My 2003 RAM 3500 Laramie (top trip at the time) was $35000. A comparable 2023 is around $90,000, with top trim levels above $100k.
My 2003 2500HD listed at $53,000CAD when I bought it new. The same truck (not diesel) similarly equipped now lists at $84,872CAD. That isn't even in the neighborhood of double the price.
Wow that 2003 seems too high? I don't have anything exactly comparable but we bought a new 2004 Ram Laramie 4x4 crew cab diesel for $39,000 CAD.

Yes saying double was a bit of an exaggeration , but the increase has been pretty significant in the past few years. I gave 57k for a loaded 2014 3500 Laramie . That same truck today is going for pretty close to 90k , so a 33k increase in 9 years or just over $3500 increase per year . Comparing the increase of what I paid for a 99 Superduty 7.3 XLT bought new in July of 98 for 33k to 57k for the 2014 that’s 24k increase in 16 years or $1500 increase per year .
Ya, but you went from a '98 Ford to 2014 Ram....:)
