RE: Lithium 12 volt battery Is there a clear leader?

"In my mind, the ideal Lifepo4 charger would offer adjustable charge voltage (Like the PowerMax - but with a higher limit), and be a two stage design (though float is not necessary, nor harmful) so that the battery does not sit for an extended period while being held at maximum voltage..." What limit is desired? It goes to 16.5v now. It is adjustable single voltage (which does two battery "stages", bulk and absorption), but you want a charger end's two-stage. Not sure how you can have a two-stage (at the charger) adjustable voltage that is automatic as seems to be desired here. You would need an adjustable timer to go with that, but that would need a trigger since you want the battery to get fully charged first and you don't know how long that will take. The trigger would have to "see" that the battery is full somehow, and voltage can't be the trigger of course. However, it may be ok with Li batts, which start their absorption stages at a high SOC and you don't want them to be all the way full? Thanks, upon a deeper dive I can now see that the powermax voltage does go much higher than is illustrated in the charge profile chart...By ‘two stage’ my desire was simply to not have the charger remain in absorption for extended periods...

RE: Lithium 12 volt battery Is there a clear leader?

The BMS System is not the same as a charge controller - in most cases it is designed to balance (or cut-out) individual cells, prevent (via disconnect) a damaging over or under voltage condition, over amperage condition, over temp, and in some cases preventing charging below say, 32dF (some mfgs, slightly less). I’ve yet to find a charge controller with parameters to my liking, since the charge controller must be matched with a particular Lifepo4 manufacturer’s specs. Progressive Dynamics Li charger remains at maximum voltage even after the battery is fully charged (??), while Iota’s charge voltage is a tenth a volt higher than some BMS will even allow entry...If using an existing charger, the equalization feature must be defeated...Then there’s the solar controllers! In my mind, the ideal Lifepo4 charger would offer adjustable charge voltage (Like the PowerMax - but with a higher limit), and be a two stage design (though float is not necessary, nor harmful) so that the battery does not sit for an extended period while being held at maximum voltage... Cheaper Lifepo4’s can be found on Amazon, et al, but the ‘down in the dirt’ specs will vary, particularly the surge amps and duration which can be a limitation on electric motor inrush needs...Some BMS’s are more conservative this way, while a few others are a bit more tolerant. Some batteries of ’like kind’ (i.e. 12v, 100 a/hr) are of cylindrical cell design, some prismatic, while the lower end offerings tend to be of a layered pillow design where cell consistency may not be as uniform... Warranties vary widely as well... Just my 0.2 cents...

RE: inverter advice

I will second Ron you might even consider an inverter upgrade to power more you have enough battery to feed up to about a 2000 watt and nuke lunch. X2, a ProWatt 2000w sine-wave is a good match for most microwaves...

RE: Truck Camper with Built in Genset?

I’ve run a uber efficient Coleman Mach 1 P.S. 11k btu off of a Honda 2000i along with Sure-start but due to higher desert elevations, traded up to the new Honda 2200i for the added headroom... Compressor amps tend to climb a bit above 95 degF, and in conjunction with elevation tends to make a genny output a bit lower as well... Portable Honda genny is very quiet and transmits no nagging vibrations into the camper...

RE: Eagle Cap 1160

Well part of this equation depends on whether your talking a first generation 1160 (a bit lower basement), or a newer model 1160, so I’ll assume it’s newer ‘above the bed rails’ generation that you’re referring to.. I can only speak to the previous generation 1160 which is the same height (and basement height) as my 2009 995 which has no side entry...My 995 resting atop a 2016 3500 dually Ram is about 12’-5” to the top of the air conditioner (my garage door is 14’ tall), so I’m fairly sure the present generation 1160 with it’s taller, more spacious basement is somewhat higher than that...JMO

RE: AGM Troubles Update

In my view, the weak link with AGM’s is that they can’t be equalized...FWIW, I’m now leaning towards Lithium.

RE: DRW back to SRW

In my view all this pontificating and hand wringing is mostly about folks justifying their personal choice as the correct one...I had both, and a dually for 13 years, driven in just about every scenario imaginable without a hiccup...Best thing to do is to buy what’s compatible for a given camper and skip all the gossipy ruminating...An overloaded truck makes zero sense period...

RE: Atwood furnace not igniting

I had a similar problem, and after examination it was not the sail switch... Turned out that theres an ignition prover (not sure if thats the proper OEM name) just above the exhaust outlet that has two electrode prongs, that over a time the gap can get outta spec due to road vibration... I pulled this out and closed the gap a bit (to about 1/4”) and all was well again... Haven't had a single recurrence in over 5 years since...

RE: Renogy 100ah LifePo4 Lithium - Max Surge Current

As I seem to recall reading somewhere, LiFePo4 is not intended to be used as an enginestarting battery, thus is not rated in CCA, but I can’t be certain...Just saying.

RE: Non-renewable Lithium...Fact.

Actually, Gary, this thread actually illustrates the value of dialogue. I am a pro-EV person -- we are considering getting an EV car for DW, who does not need much range. And yes, we have solar panels on our roof at home. But I had never stopped to think about the finite nature of lithium, until the OP posted a question. And then I did a little googling and found that yes, although lithium is plentiful in the short run, there are long term concerns. So I discovered something by actually listening to someone with whom I might disagree. This is a good thing. I am confident that the market will supply an alternative, just as LED bulbs have really "outshone" incandescents. And remember that in the late 1800s, city planners were getting worried about all of the horse manure in the streets of the bigger cities, until cars came along to the rescue. So yes, some threads can turn into partisan rants, on both sides. But other threads can serve as respectful exchanges of information and opinion. It all depends on us, the forum participants! Ha, I seriously doubt we’d disagree on all that much, and due to the stated likelihood of managed grid outages in CA, were one to have rooftop solar I believe that EV’s make particularly strong case, as does a standby Li battery bank strategy, to become self-sufficient... FWIW, having gained some hands-on experience wiring an entire project camper with a sine inverter-charger, converter, main panel, sub-panel, solar, air conditioner, Danfoss dc compressor refer and Li battery - and after running this system through it’s paces (while measuring the results, air cond. ON) my next coach battery will definitely be Li... I attempt to approach this more from an objective point of view rather than a theology...

RE: Non-renewable Lithium...Fact.

This entire thread should be deleted as it is based on the right wing talking point of "EVs bad!". The statement "can't be recycled" is totally false. Many companies have started successful recycling programs and here in Nevada where I live, lithium mining by evaporating salts is big business utilizing the old "poison waterholes" from old Western movies to get some use out of lifeless, desolate wasteland area. Myself, I have been driving electric over 7 years now, the last two getting fueled for free from our rooftop solar. The carbon industry is scared to death of electric vehicles wiping away their livelyhood and so are car dealers as, like I can assure you from my personal use, maintainance and repair of electric vehicles is a tiny fraction of that of petroleum cars. Most electric cars never get their brakes replaced unless parts rust off from age. “Right wing talking point”??, “delete entire thread” (thread censorship)??, “EV’s bad”??, “carbon industry scared to death”?? Sounds to me more like a response from a triggered, thread discussion Gate-Keeper, or someone who may see a ‘carbon boogieman’ behind every tree...JMO If one can skip past the virtue signaling and self-promotion, this thread has helped illuminate this important natural resource issue...No doubt the demand for Li will only increase, while it’s highly possible that newer battery technologies will eventually address this resource challenge...

Non-renewable Lithium...Fact.

Since EV’s are on the rise (no magic - thanks only to the invention of the high density Lithium battery), and knowing that Lithium is a limited non-renewable resource, besides wishful thinking, I wonder where this trend will eventually lead??...Surely use of Li will only increase exponentially...

RE: Wiring neutral/ground when splitting panel for MultiPlus?

After a long day of splicing wires I finally have the entire setup installed. The Victron inverter/charger is both inverting and charging. Thanks everyone for the help in determining the right setup. It was not without more hiccups today though. The batteries were again dropping to near zero voltage. I called Battle Born, who said the battery management system could be causing this, but they didn't know why. They suggested that the switch (Blue Sea Systems 350A on/off switch) could be bad. I completely removed the switch from the circuit, and that fixed the issue (at least for now). Maybe the switch was falsely tripping the BMS. I may experiment some more with different configurations for the switch. Nice, Looks like you’re on to something, Glad you’ve persevered (via process of elimination) and found a path forward...Please keep us posted as to the possibility of a BMS issue! 3 tons
